My old Stihl 044 has been ran hard, abused, and is about to give up the ghost.I have a bad crank seal on the pto side and the saw has a few other issues.A saw dealer in the area has a good used 272xp that I looked at this morning.Started up easy and sounds good, looks like a fairly low hour saw that was well cared for.Is there a big enough difference in the 272 and 372 that I should look around for a 372 instead.Used 372s seem to be a lot more common on the Bay.Just wanting some opinions. Thanks

I have had both and run them side by side and prefer the 272xp. The front tensioner doesn't bother me at all. Power to weight I think the 272xp is a better package compared to the 372. And seems to have more torque. But!!! You absolutely CAN'T go wrong with either.
Thanks for that info Paul.Dealer is asking $469 for the 272 with a new 20" Oregon Power Match bar and chain.I am going to study a few more options this evening ,but I believe its a really good deal.

Yep if it has good compression, starts and runs well that is a fair price. Could offer him 400 and see what happens! 👍🏻
Yep I am going to ask him to do a compression test if/when I go back.Somewhere around 160psi should be about right I am guessing?

The 372 is "the" saw in the world with the greatest parts availability - both OEM and an array of aftermarket parts from all over the world. Must have something to do with its sales numbers and popularity through time.

Hyway big bore cylinders and pop-up pistons (Taiwan), New West crankcases (like OEM), crankshafts from Taiwan as well as the Farmertec (China), Oregon clutch bell (Canada), along with most OEM parts available at Husqvarna prices.

One thing to consider, the 272xp was discontinued in 1997, while the 372xp is still in production. I would dig around and see how readily available parts are for that 272 before I bought in.
A quick glance at ebay and a bunch of other sites showed parts are still common. Not sure how many are OEM or aftermarket, but the parts are there at least for now.

Seems to me you like the idea of a 272, if thats what you want just go for it.
I have always been a fan of the older saws, but I am open to anything.I have a 40 cc ,a 50 cc,a 64 cc,and 73cc(the 044).A new 372 would be out of the question for me,but a good deal on one like the 272 I found I would sure consider. My need for a 70 cc + saw is not very often,so I even thought about going with a Chinese clone.I can buy the Farmertec version of the 272 new today for $299.I could swap the b/c back and forth from my 6421 Makita and be in business for dirt cheap.I just feel like a sell out going that route, but hey, everything else is made in China right?

An OEM 272 is the real deal. Its an old saw, how much use it have been through makes the difference between a worn out wreck and a professional saw that lasts a life time. That would be exactly the same with any second hand 372.

Czed will be your buddy for life, best buddy you can ever have if you have 272. He probably have more than you have fingers on your hand.
Actually I only have 4 272s iirc
But I do have around 9 varietys of 371/372/2171/2166/2171s
For 469.00 for a 24 year old saw?
I'd personally go 372/2171
Many prefer inboard clutches and tactical chain adjusters
And don't like rubber av/outboard clutches and inboard chain adjusters.

+2

I have ran both side by side here, well I'm counting my 268XPS as a 272XP and there isn't much difference in power. The 372XP is smoother, better anti-vibe and better in the ergonomic department, plus a pretty big advantage in parts selection and availability, but for sure I wouldn't pass on a really nice low hour 272XP if I was looking for a 70cc saw to add to my line-up.......

You could probably get a 266-272 in good shape on here for cheaper than 469. Personally, I’m coming from an old 266 to recently getting a new 372, and I’d go with a 365-372 if I were you. 2 series saws are great but a 372 is nicer to run all day.

That said, that 272 might be your right choice. Pics would help to get a gauge on what kind of value it is.
