Just once I'd like to see "Bubba" show up and lie to the owner about insurance and then proceed to drop said tree directly on the house. That'd show 'em..........

What do guys think about 3 non working Stihl for $80? Model 017, MS250, 028. I'd like to get them for a couple projects but dont want to sink a lot of money in them to get them running. Is this a good deal no matter what?

No Brainer. The 028 probably has a bad piston and cylinder, and it will be difficult fixing it cheap. The other saws have after market parts available. They are cheap-o home owners saws, but you can easily double your money, probably gain more, buy placing the saws as "are" on eBay. Sink your money into knowledge, or start buying donuts for someone who knows how to fix saws.

Might want to check the serial numbers before handing over the cash on those. Guys don't typically buy $4000 worth of saws and then pawn them. :msp_wink:

They might if their work truck needs serious right now repairs, or facing eviction tomorrow because three months behind, emergency medical bills, whatever..you just never know. but ya, good to check.

It depends on what's wrong with them..Stihl parts aren't cheap, even used parts. If you have the patience you could buy them and sell the one(s) that are too expensive to repair or sell parts.

Well I am assuming they have not been driven over, and at worst have bad cylinders. Even if they are all smoked, if they have bars and still appear to be saws they are well worth the money.

Husky 2101 just went for $1634.00 on ebay. Same guy that paid $2204.66 for a SD166 on ebay recently and then after that another SD166 for $1404.97 on ebay. Must have a big wallet or a lot of credit. I bet he hangs out here on arboristsite. Fess up guy.

I personally would be all over that. They look like good projects, and I'm sure you could get your money's worth back out of them. There are a lot of saws out there for sale that don't run simply because the owner is neglectful in his routine maintenance (ie: fresh gas).
