I saw it on Ebay/Craigslist

I would report it to ebay, then go from there. That is too bad the first project saw you got from there is junk. I have had good luck with parts on ebay and I have gotten one saw off of there and was lucky that it was as advertised.

I got my Dolmar off eBay and got shafted on the deal .... The issue was similar where the seller described accurately, but left out several things. Excluded the fact that the B&C & air filter needed replacing, plus the trigger interlock needed to be replaced (that is being done tomorrow). The details left out just fry me .... plus, the thing was absolutely FULL of oily sawdust and muck and crap.

The bottom line is that I really like the saw a lot, but spent a LOT of time and unpredicted expense getting it.

Pretty sure I got screwed big time on an ebay purchase. I was looking for a project and found a 288xp on ebay and bid on it and won. Here was the sellers description

"this is my husqvarna 288 xp that i wanted to keep but i just need the noney. it comes with everything you see here plus a working chainbrake and clutch cover that has the metal handle. the saw will start and run but it wanted to flood out, so im just assuming it needs carb rebuild. the saw has very good compression".

I get the saw and it has 50psi of compression, scored piston and cylinder, and a cracked crank case. Now how in the HE** did he have it running if all this was wrong with it when he had it? Well this was the first time I have bought a project off of ebay and it will be the last. I sent a message to the fella giving a chance to make it right but probably won't get a response. Any suggestions?

IF it's the saw that i remember, what did you give for it? around $150? honestly, the ignition, carb and brake are worth more than 1/2 of that, BUT, I understand where your coming from...

This is what the (TOTAL BS) Buyer protection is for.... you CAN get your $ back...

ONLY issue here is... try explaining to a head-set jockey @ ebay HOW the saw is bad when you receive it. :dizzy: Your lucky to get someone in the U.S.A, never mind someone who knows what 'compression' is...

You may be able to get the cyl cleaned up ok, who knows... where is the crack in the case???

I bought a tank on ebay recently...it had VERY low useage... the seller FAILED to mention that it was cracked at the 'loop' at the back of the handle... it was superficial, but still, NOT COOL...

buy a project saw from the classified section here, at least they will tell it straight!

I agree... IF i knew you were looking for a 288 project..... :msp_razz:

... that the B&C & air filter needed replacing, plus the trigger interlock needed to be replaced

I expect almost EVERY bar & chain on a saw I buy to need 'work' or replacement (if your unable to true the rails, etc...) they can EVEN LOOK straight when a chain is on it, when, in fact they are NOT.... so, unless the bar looked NEW, It would NOT have suprised me...

AND, filters are MADE to be cleaned... unless the flocking was gone, it was probably just un-maintained. With that being said, the intake side of the piston would be my biggest concern. But, CLEANING the filter, is well, part of a used saw....

The throttle interlock, on the other hand, well, that does suck.

my the $.02 of my experiences....

I saw a post last week about the saw S.Palin signed. It was put on E-bay for charity. If the final price has already been put up,I apologize for this post,if not here is the link:Sarah Palin autographed Stihl MS 660 Chainsaw - eBay (item 250840274493 end time Jun-24-11 14:28:59 PDT)

AND.....the buyer will surely want one of THESE to go with it :msp_ohmy:

I paid $137.50. Luckily I can clean up the cylinder. Even worse part is he is kinda my neighbor cause he only lives about an hour away from me. I have had great luck buyin used parts on eaby and this is what gave me the confidence to buy the saw.

That's not too bad then... despite the LYING...

where is the case busted?

AS'ers have restored these, and got 5 bills for them ;)

keep in mind they are STILL a VERY desirable saw, and there's a bit of margin to still be made fixing them... UNLIKE MANY other saws...

it's not even worth fixing a Ebay 372 anymore... saws with SMOKED top ends that have had the BAG beat out of them, go for $350+!! :dizzy: :bang:

When I did buy ebay saw's, I expect everything to be bad.....PERIOD. The seller is selling a saw (read; POS to him) that he doesn't use anymore for some reason....(it doesn't run right and he knows it) or it wouldn't be sold, I base my bid on that. I expect a parts saw or a saw that needs lots of parts....you pick.

Well said sir. I think i am just gonna start lookin at the local shops. There are a couple that I dont think are pestered too much. One in particular that I really like to trade with cause they are so straight forward, pretty much know what they are talkin about, and pretty fair.

A bit more than I want to pay.

Well good news! The seller contacted me back and is willing to make it right  I replied and told him if he would refund a little less than half of what I paid for shipping and everything I would keep it.

Here is his response "i appreciate the opportunity to make it right. i did not know the saw had a cracked crankcase, and i never actually had it tested for compression i just knew it was very hard to turn over. what would you wish for me to do. are you still interested in the saw or are you looking for a full refund of your money."

are you saying he's returning 1/2 of your shipping, or 1/2 of your total purchase, about $60?! :dizzy:

On closer inspection, where the crankcase is cracked it won't hurt the running of the saw, so I offered him to rufund $65 and that would suit me and he said he would. So i'm good with that.

Advice...Husqvarna 240S

I just picked up a Husky 240S (old saw w/20 bar and chain) on ebay for $22.00 + shipping. Seller claims it ran, then started giving him fits, to all you Husqvarna experts out there: Is this something I would want in my stable? I can rebuild and make it pretty before cutting season starts, but is it worth putting time and money into? Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian
