If you have a Wraptor do you overreach for the perfect TIP?

I shot a line in the top of a 45' maple today and thought I hit a good crotch but what I actually hit was 1 1/2" narrow crotch 4 ft. above the crotch I was trying to hit. It was obscured by the canopy on one side and from the other side I could see my line was through the crotch I was aiming for. If I didn't have the Wraptor I probably would have picked something lower with a clear view and just advanced. My question is this:
Has anyone else with a Wraptor noticed a tendency to try and hit the highest TIP possible and possibly sacrificed time and or safety?
Phil

you really didn't use the wraptor in that 45' tall maple did you?

as to the question, i almost always try to hit the 'perfect crotch' from the ground. Id rather not have to re tie-in if i don't have to.

No. I used it on two 45s and one 55. On the second one I dropped my handsaw and since I was by myself I went down and got it, got a drink of water and was back up in 5 minutes. Do you have an answer specific to using a Wraptor?

no wraptor here, just 99% of the 45'-55' tall maples round here would be silly to use a wraptor and i can climb bottom to top and back to bottom again in 5min, most maples that size look like a ladder to me, save the wraptor for white oaks with the first limb at like 65'

That's wonderful for you. I had a feeling we were playing measure the weeny. You win.
Phil

not having a pissing match with u just the maples that size in my area would be a waste of gas and emmisions to fire up the wraptor for.......do you keep it with you for the whole tree or do you send it down once your up, just seems like it could get in the way aswell. And if climbing by yourself like you stated and you do lower it down now we got a $2500 tool sitting at the bottom on the tree :msp_scared:

I don't feel I overeach for the tip. I just get a decent one and advance again once in my dbrt setup if I have to.

It's better for me not to take the chance of hanging the bag up if I get a decent crotch right off the bat.

I still overreach at times but less now. ascending really hard on bum shoulder so if i fling a couple extra times it can be worth it. having the hayauchi to set the line way above makes me less of a perfectionist on the bigshot

see ropetek.com for answers to general ?s

on the 95 foot pines i just did I shot high AS POSSIBLE. I had three guys hang on the rope no problem I then raptored my azz up bombed limbs sent it down and tied my end at top. I came down cleaned up brush so the wood did not make clean-up peta! I enjoy climbing again lol:cheers:

Hey Small Wood, as you may know I have been using a Wraptor for 4 years now. One thing that I realized pretty early on is that setting a line as high as possible just makes the job easier, unfortunately it also makes the ascent more dangerous as you become used to smaller and smaller TIPs. I personally have had a 10 ' drop on one which is why the "Wraptor Rope" has 7% elongation at 10% MBS, you dont even feel the "stop". Obviously make sure you have a good crotch to catch the rope if your marginal one breaks. Always do a 2 man jump test to test TIP. What I tell everybody that I talk to is the Wraptor is as safe as your TIP and it is a week TIP that will inevitably put me outa business.

Hey Rope, glad you are enjoying using it. Bet you wish you had the money a year ago when you first called me dont ya, think of all those 100 degree days when you looked at that next tree and wondered how you could muster enough steam to get up there. Now the hardest part of climbing is hitting that crotch, for real!!

Lol yeah paul I enjoy it very much bro. It ,makes me re-think if I need the bucket on a job or not. It cost just a few cents to climb vrs 50 bucks for the bucket and then still climb most times lol. I was already accurate with the big shot. I think I will get some cheap bi nocks to keep in the truck to inspect tip But I was not overly fearful after all us bouncing on the rope. Very nice product simple to use and as safe as anything else in our work imo.
