Some clients think this is the best part of the tree and that I'm going to bring it to the sawmill and make valuable lumber out of it.

No doubt!!

"That log is worth 2 ta 3 grand............right"

Hear it all the time!

We took a Red Oak to the mill last year, one of my guys wanted too.
He paid his buddy to haul it with his flatbed wrecker, cost him a 100. Mill paid him 125! 40" SOLID, 16ft long!! tons of money there!

Mills just love those "City Trees." Lol

A quarter of the value in firewood is the tree, the rest is made up in the backbreaking labor of turning the dam thing into little pieces that'll fit in a fireplace. It was a cruel joke played on the woodcutters by stonemasons of old!-Kevin

if the customer wants the wood for there own burning ill cut it up and stack it.if they say somethin about me reselling it i tell them the truth firewood is very labor intensive and its not profitable for me to mess with it.your always gona get that call "if you take it down you can have it"i guess that people just dont understand how much work is actually invoved.my bigest problem is all the people out there doin a 1000 dollar job for 300 or less that just gripes my a## .but i guess the only way to stop that is to let them break themselves.i know that its probably not the right thread but im tired of the jakeleggs, crackheads, and illegalls

I like tree climbers explanation more. :p Although one of ten customers (that you would want to be customers) wouldn't be offended by it.

Well the ones that don't laugh are probably JO's and you may not wanna work for them anyway .. I just say that there is a hauling charge and what the wood gets used for after that makes no difference ... The days of removing trees for the wood ended when wood stop going up in price , like the 70's , I also have alot of people ask me if I sell it and want a break , its still has to be processed it doesn't leave there yard ready right ....

While I prefer to work for people with a sense of humor who understand the difficulty and hard work going into it. That's not usually the case, I'll settle for a housewife with panties in a bunch as long as she brings everybody some lemonade or water. Maybe some of her kids snack too, lmao.

kajudude, that bucket in your pic... it's got a 10 foot elevator or more?

#### always floats somehow right ... My new opinion on the whole issue of cut throating is do a little aswell , if I can cover my expenses I been gladly taking the work , for one people see the trucks working , and two you are now taking the work from someone who in most cases are pricing for the short time fix , so you are hurting them worse ... When people are hungry and aggressive they will always find a way to survive , so don't count on them going anywhere anytime soon and the customers like" cheap", there is a guy here that has signs that say TREES CUT CHEAP and I see his trucks full everyday at the dump full so he's working and he is somehow growing he has two full time crews and the equipment is well maintained , in his case the WALMART mentality is working well for him DO MORE FOR LESS..

seems pretty simple.. but i guess some of your customers have a hard time seeing how loading thousands of pounds worth of wood on a truck , and taking it all with you(somewhere) takes more time and work than leaving it lay where it fell?
amazing , isnt it?

Okay not really what your looking for but, my metaphor for firewood...

Wood is like Gash, if your willing to work for it you can get all you want for free, but some people are still willing to pay for it. You can continue it with, The people who have the wood are like the woman that own the gash. They both think everyone wants, its the best around and worth a fortune. When in reality its dried out, punky or smells like hell and Im not going to all the work to clean that nasty thing up for nothing. But Im sure if you go on craigs list I bet you can find people that would love a piece of that.

I dont even tolerate a home owner trying to pull the " you can sell it" crap!! I tell them if you want it gone & dont wanna pay me & my crew....you can load it in my truck & my crew & I will watch, you`ll save x amount of dollars!!

Had one guy take me up on that, funny...he thought he was a badazz.....hows those rounds of sugar maple feel? nice wagon wheel sized chunks at 6-8 inches thick!!!....he loaded 3....said he would pay double rather than load anymore!! lesson learned.
...LXT................

You missed out on a golden opportunity for some profit. I'm sure that you could have sold tickets for that sporting event to many of the tree workers in your area.

We always remove the wood. Leaving for the homeowner and telling them to post it on CraigsList, or having a wood scavenger come onto their property not only opens them up to potential lawsuits, but also looks amatuerish. We operate in an urban area where noone has an outdoor wood furnace and not many people burn firewood so it's pretty much standard to just get rid of it.

If they want you to buy the firewood, you could always say: " I'd rather cut down a tree that had a family of gummy bears living in it."
