Got a call for an estimate yesterday for removel of 10 pine trees. Lady said that someone started the job and never came back.

I went and looked at the job. One 6" tree and been cut down and left on ground. Nothing else done in two weeks. Tree's run from 60 to 100 plus feet and from 18 to 36 inch's for the other nine. Close to house, fence and power drop. Gave her a est. of $7500 to complete job. 20x40 foot drop zone. The org. est. was $4000.

Person that started job won't return her calls. He was also 10 days late in starting job after several calls from customer.

How long should she wait before contracting with someone else?

If I were her, Id send the original comp. a certified letter stating cancellation of the bid/contract. Maybe/probably not include $50 for job time spent. When I received the delivery confirmation back, Id feel that was ample to give the go ahead to someone else. If it came back undeliverable due to lack of signiture, that too would be a go ahead.

Too bad that guy wont just come out and tell her he aint up to the job. We got a job here like that recently. Low bid came in, set up, and backed out. We got the job for 50% more! (both bids were submitted at same time).

If you get the job, get in fast (soon) and get out...and leave w/ your cash in hand.

is all that's needed. I've been on both sides of this one; written notice is the way to go legally and ethically.

Just take the job. The hacks that originally bid it probibly bit off more than they can chew. I get all kinds of calls from hacks that bid a job, but dont have the talent or equipment to get a job done that they bid, and was way over thier head.
