I'm working on next years wood, not this falls wood, just figured I'd be much further along.

Picked up some free oak from a neighbor so I figured the easiest way to split it was right off the truck. The umbrella is always my friend but it was for rain today. I stayed nice and dry.

J, pulled this from another board Im on. Good depiction of what I was going after in regard to the tong suggestion.

You could even split it while the tongs hold it so the halves don't hit the ground.

Not sure the tongs will hold the halves after they've been split but I like the idea regardless.

I'm lucky enough that the forks on the tractor slide close enough together to do that with the real big logs.

Works awesome! Just have to load only on the tarp, not into the space in front of and behind the wheel wells.

I use tongs all the time, but usually on long logs. For rounds I don't want to pick up by hand, I roll a few into the tractor bucket and position it next to the splitter table, then just roll them on.

Going slower than I hoped but doesn't it always? Pile is just over 60'

How many hours does it take to produce the wood in the picture? From first cut to last split...

Put in 7 hours today since I haven't worked in the last 3. Could have gone longer but the pool was calling my name. Worked on some big stuff before it reached 90 this morning. Last picture was about 2:15 when I stopped. Pile is up to 80' long

Progress on oak pile number 2 has been slower than I hoped. I have hit it hard some days and took off other days to spend time with the family. This one is 30 feet so far. Been right around 90 all week and I am feeling it after 8.5 hours yesterday and 6 today. The bin in the back is for the short pieces which go in their own pile for guys with small stoves

I took a cue from you and Crane and put a canopy up over the splitter. Not sure why I didn't do it earlier.

Well things didn't go as fast as hoped- same ole song we all sing. Here are some pics of what's here and what's left. I figure I have about 90 cords processed. The long windrow piles are either oak or mixed hardwood. The wood stacked on pallets is 20-24" cutoffs. The short pile is 6"-12" cutoffs. The pile of logs are a combination of poplar and ash. I will be cutting, splitting, and delivering as I go with that as I expect it to be dry enough- at least the stuff off the ground. The splits in the truck mark the first delivery of the season set to be dropped off tomorrow morning. I have 34 cords ordered at this point and will sell most of what you see while still wearing shorts and a tshirt.

Delivered 4 cords on Saturday and now have 40 cords ordered. Good thing temps are in the mid 80's or I would really be backed up!
