Hello all, I am new to the site. I recently purchased a 1974 Asplundh JEX chipper and am in need of info. The motor is a 4 cylinder engine. Two label plates on the engine state FORD POWER PRODUCTS CONN DIV. and on one it says 2.8L. I am looking for the operation/service and parts manuals. I will post the engine numbers later since I forgot the paper at home. Currently I am in the middle of rewiring it which took forever to figure out since some of the wires were burnt from laying on the exhaust. Plus some of the wires were broken off not connected. I am surprised that there is little to NO info on the engine on line. As for the chipper manual, I have that but it doesn't give too much service info for the unit. Everything spins freely, the blades feel pretty sharp and the belts look good but any help and ideas to get this unit back into service would be appreciated.
Thanks
Glenn

tons of info on here for adjusting the knifes and cutter bar. those knifes have to be sharp enough to shave with or it wont feed happy. And oh ya! DUCK... lol

Yeah, I have been reading on the knives adjustment and I will start spraying penatrating oil in them to hopefully ease that pain. Like I said earlier they do feel pretty sharp. Napa was able to locate a new fuel pump for me. It is not the original style but the numbers crossed over to a non-glass pump. That is coming from Washington state and should be here Monday-Tuesday. Is there any grease fittings that I should be looking for. I only found some on the spring shackles. I bought this machine since everytime I was renting one it cost me $350 for the weekend. I am new to this machine and I have seen some video's on the chuck & DUCK procedure. lol.

I believe the drum bearings are completely sealed. possibly 2 grease fittings for the clutch lever and that's all she has. make sure the governor has oil in it, spin the drum by hand and try to do a real good assessment of they a those bearings at 40+ yrs old who knows when they been changed last and if that drum comes undone you may as well scrap it. but its worth replacing them if there rumbley. and duck.. lol

How and where does the oil go for the governor?? What weight oil would you recommend to use in that and the motor itself. This is the main reason that I need the operational/service manual. Please help. Napa was able to cross reference the fuel pump number 4088 to a non-glass globe fuel pump. That should be here on Monday-Tuesday. Glad I didn't start it up yet. Just finished rewiring the unit the last night. Any ideas on how to clean the air filter. It seems to be a wire mesh and other than the bottom coming off for oil in the bottom how does it come apart?
Thanks
Glenn

OK, so the fuel pump came in from Washington state and it was marked correctly on the box but some dimwit put a different pump in the box. Needless to say my search for a mech pump hit a brick wall. I installed a MR GASKET 12S electric fuel pump on it. Also put new automotive mechanical Water temp & Oil pressure gauges on too. Ford Power Products and thier printing company never got back to me with manuals. I called PITT AUTO ELECTRIC COMPANY in Pa and talked to Bill Anker and did he help me out. I got both the engine & parts manuals. I am almost to a point of starting it and need some pointers.

Should I pull the gas lever out all the way or do you twist it counter clockwise 2-3 turns to start the engine. I am guessing that it will need full choke till it smooths out. Do I engage the clutch at low idle or Mid gas. Also what would be the shut down procedure so not to wreck the machine &/or motor.

As always any and all help is appreciated!
Thanks
Glenn

I had a '79 version of that chipper years ago. Thankfully it's long gone. That motor is a Ford industrial motor. I found that getting parts for it was often easier at a tractor dealership. That motor was common in several tractors of the same generation, or so I was told. You will have to get a feel for how it likes to be started, they all seem to like a different amount of choke/throttle. Engage the blades at low RPM's, then throttle up to full speed. Reverse the procedure when shutting down. Be prepared for scratched up arms, back, neck, ears.

mine is older chucker, regulator is from Hoof mfg, which was bought out by Pierce Lockcraft. Runs with 20 w oil, like hydraulic oil. have had pump people tell me it should be constant viscosity oil, which they filled as ATF. Top plug is the filler, side plug is the oil level.

You have an old style oil bath air filter. Dump the bottom pan full of oil and leaked in water, spray clean or wipe it out. no replaceable anything. Fill with clean 30W, or even hydraulic oil up to about the 1.5 in mark, reinstall and tighten the band clamp well.

So let me understand this correctly, I should put in straight 20W or 30w oil in lieu of 5w-30 or 5w-20????? Even though I got the motor manual the funny thing is that it doesn't tell you what type of oil to put in it. LOL. I had to send the starter off to get rebuilt due to the gear didn't spin back to meet the flywheel. The shaft was all rusted but the starter did spin pretty good. So I still haven't started yet. I am also waiting for a battery box to come in this week to since the original one was replaced via a plastic box. It was all cracked so I decided to replace it with a steel one that I can drop down below the exhaust pipe that is on the machine which is not the original one. I still appreciate all the help you guys are giving me. I hope to have everything in by mid week to give it a try.
