Looking for a project saw got a question

I kinda want to take a cheap hardware store saw and tinker with it. Are there any of the cheap saws that respond well to modifications. I kinda want a sleeper saw so to speak. I wouldn't really use this saw for anything just playing from time to time and making alot of noise in the shop.
 
If it's gotta be on the cheap, I'd rather go with an old, beat, used pro saw, rather than an el-cheapo new saw. Alot of those saws are going to be in the same boat as your 310 with their inherent design limitations. You can smooth ports and that sort of thing, but for some saws, rasing, lowering, widening ports may not be doable.

Parts saws are everywhere.
