Is there a concrete block/brick distributor near you? We have one here locally, carry any size firebrick you need

A good refractory cement: Pyroseal.

I made some fire brick replacement for regular 4 1/2 x9 splits out of two layers of 1/2 inch steel plate with a 1/4 spacer between. works great especially on the back wall where wood thrown in would break the brick. 20 yrs or so ago and still like new in my Riteway 37
