Hello,
Does anyone know if you can buy a modified 260 muffler to just bolt on my saw instead of trying it myself? I have a tach and would adjust it myself, I just don't feel comfortable trying this myself with a saw that is almost new. Thank You for any advice or info.

Yup: your Stihl dealer. Buy an extra muffler front cover, add a couple holes under the screen (or enlarge the existing holes into a single open rectangle), reattach the cover, and retune!

Unless you're going crazy on your 026/260 with intake spacers, 044 carbs, etc., you should be able to get plenty of flow out of a mildly modified stock cover.

If I get the chance tomorrow I'll pull the cover off and take a picture of what I have on my 026Pro. It works pretty well and is fairly simple to do.

Actually, if I were you I'd just cut up the one that you have already, and if you don't like how it turns out THEN go buy another. No sense throwing your money away prematurely!
 
Take off the muffler front cover, remove the screen, drill a 5/16th or 3/8 hole FROM THE BACK above and below the existing hole. Clean up any loose stuff, replace the screen and reattach to the saw. 5 minutes max.

You'll need to readust your carb slightly richer to keep it below 14k wot (with bar and chain), and the 260 has a limiter cap. Do a search on AS - a lot of info on the 026 / 260 mufler mods and carb adjustments.
 
026/260 very easy...........I would try it on your cover or buy
a used one, the 024 covers are the same.
 
Wow you guys were right on the money. Mr. Lakeside, I drilled the two holes like you said above and below the screw hole. I also opened the existing hole in the cover up just slightly. I then put it on the tach and it definately needed to be richened up. I turned my adjustment screw back to the limiter stopped me. It is now taching around 13,700 so I'll think I'll leave it there. What a difference, very noticeable IMO. It did make it louder, but not annoying. Thanks for the tip and I never spent a penny like I had planned. I love this site.

Glad to here it turned out OK :D

If you 260 is new, after a few tanks it may gain some rpms
and be over the 14K max. Make sure when setting the rpms
that your air filter is clean.
 
If you had room to turn the H screw back to the limiter, it was probably set for E10 gas... make sure you don't run gas with alcohol unless you check your setting. And, as Trigger points out, it also will gain a bit as it beds in.
 
Allright, somebody had to keep posting threads on 026 Pro muffler mods, now Im all in. Im gonna mod my 026 this weekend. Only one question. I dont have a tach, is there a safe way to adjust the carb without a tach after modding?

I dont believe so... others will differ.
Sure, use the "4-stoking sound" technique, but only a tach tells you if your ear is calibrated...

Use the "timed cut" approach, but be sure your wood and chains are consistent. You still need to check that you haven't exceeded the max allowed rpm.

If you're unsure, and have no tach, be conservative.

or, spend $25 on a tach, or up to $100 for for a good one.
