The auction advertised it as a dynamite drill...for drilling stumps to insert dynamite and blow them out. Getting the saw gearbox with the drill was a pure bonus.

I have also seen adversisements for a "tap auger" I think they called it for tapping maple trees, same principle but smaller bit if I understand that activitiy.

I do have somewhere some ad or literature showing the 35 with auger being used in building a log cabin, may have to have another look for it now that I have one.

I missed out on 35 with an ice auger last year simply because I was too tired to drive across Minneapolis to follow up on a Craigslist advertisement.

hey mark, cool drill!:)
off topic but still mcculloch related.
i remember about 20 or so years ago seeing a mcculloch powered
'jack hammer'. never seen one since and can't find anything on the WHOLE
interweb about one either. seems i might be mistaken but i'm sure it was a chainsaw style power head on top of it and from my minds eye it sort of looked like a '250' saw or around that model type.
when i was walking past it i mentioned to the fellow that was holding it that the pull start cord needed to be rewound before it wrapped around his arm, as it was thrashing rather wildly at him when it was running.
would love to see one of them......:greenchainsaw:

Another nice find Mark. Your McCulloch collection is really great - It is great to see so many yellow saws under one roof. You certainly have some interesting and unusual old McCullochs amongst your fleet.

Keep finding and keep posting - thanks!

Regards,

Chris.

Mark, I could have saved you some money on that drill, as I was the backup bidder. Next time I'm bidding I'll check with you. If you keep posting pics of the Super 797, I'll start to miss it. I cut a load you wood with your SP105, by far the most impressive yellow saw I've ever ran. Maybe it is because you had it tuned so well. I was surprised how fast it was in the cut, reminded me somewhat of runnng my 066.

My next project is a 550. At 103 cc's it should be a good saw. Does a 550 out run a Super 250?

Tom

The most likely swap would be into one of the 1-60 Series saws, they are quite distinctive with the large squarish fuel tank.

As with all things McCulloch though, that block could be fit backwards or forwards into any number of saws.

From the 55 through the 1-60, 1-80, and 800 (gear drives) the same large gear box was used and all of the engine blocks could be fit with the gear drive. A 1-40 with a gear box and the square tank is a 1-60. A 1-70 with a gear box is a 1-80. The basic 440 stroked out to 1.5" with a gear box is a 640. A 740 with a gear box is an 840.

The exception in the large frame gear drive line up was the 650/660 with their compact little gear box that hides so neatly behind the oversize clutch cover you could easily overlook the possibility of the gear drive saw.

Thanks Mark!!!
That is a bundle of info that I was needing!
A good list like that has already got me putting this here and that there for a couple project saws! I see the similarities but a good run down like that helps tremendously!!! Many thanks!!!!!

Mark i know where there are tons of old mac saws just collecting corrosion cause they are left out in the elements if you ever come down my area i can show you this place who knows they may even sell some of them

Tons of American made McCulloch parts left to crumble away in the elements?
That sounds to me just how the Vietnam Veterans were treated after coming home! Calvin, are any of these parts still usable? Magnesium corrosion is like malignant skin cancer, if you catch it early enough you just might save it. Is this prison camp, I mean scrap place close to you Calvin? Can you slip in & take pictures to document the conditions? We need some reliable intelligence before we do anything rash. These persons holding on to these parts may go ahead & scrap them if they know we are coming. Can you provide GPS coordinates? Addresses? Land marks?

Question: I don't see much on this thread about modding the muffler on a PM610--I have one that I think I would like to wake up a little, but I don't want to ruin the muffler or even go to the trouble if it doesn't typically respond to opening up the exhaust. Is it feasible, and how would be the best way to mod it? Thanks for any info.

All right you Mac heathens, worshipers of big cube Mac's, Mac Racers and all round lovers of yellow magnesium, I stumbled into this Mac beauty this week.

Looking at the size of its mighty 12" blade, I go this musta been the ultimate Mac racing saw where the oldtimers like to brag about....

Just tell me what I got here...solid frame without AV, full metal throttle, big size reeds , manual oiler, racing size bar, ....you name it

When I woke up this beast (the inlet needle was leaking) , I got this weird feeling of new spiders crawling upon Randy's brain at night, and my buddy Mark encountering horrible dreams thinking I might challenge him in the upcoming GTG with this beast... Even downunder McBob's ticker went skyrocketing for an instant....

The race bet is on now....:rockn:

Well Rolland, what you have there is a Mac15. McCulloch's first stab at the comsumer market. 4.9ci/80cc. Less agressive porting than the 'pro' saws. Most had the HC Tillotson carb that is an HL without a pump section (as the carb is just gravity fed). Only has a metering section/diaphragm. An HL rebuild or gasket kit will work for it. You'll just have parts left over...

It was competition to the Homelite Buz and 500 consumer saws. Both of these were competition for the Mono/Wards/Sears/etc consumer saws. It has decent power, but less zip than a 'regular' 4.9ci Mac or Homie saw of the period. A few fellows have already been talkin' about having a racing 'class' for the Mac 15 saws................since the wildthing yahoos are doing it. I am actualy on the lookout for one localy (they come up on CL from time to time) just to get in on the fun...

12"? You should pass that saw on up to Niko. ;) It looks really clean. It'll be a hit at the races for sure. The hot girls in their bikinis will all want to have their picture taken with that Hot saw. Wax that baby up & you'll blind all of your competition with that sun-like radiant glow!:D

If I can't get Jacob to squeeze in a piston out of a 99, I just might have to have my 15 "Snellerized" since it ain't nearly as purdy as Roland's. Now if I can only get Art Martin to build a chain for me.....Wooo wee little doggy! :chainsaw:

OK I know it's in here.............but I don't have the time right now to seach through the 200+ pages of this thread for it....

Does anyone have the link to the site with all the Mac IPL's? I need an IPL for Dad's PM320. Gotta order a carb kit for it, and can't remember what carb it has. Some kind of Zama IIRC...

I ran it dry and put it on the shelf for about 10 years. Went to fire it up to do a few quick pruning cuts on an apple tree today before work, and the damn carb diaphragms appear to be all stiffened up. Wouldn't stay running for anything. Ended up putting it away and doing the cuts with the trusty SXL-AO.:censored:

Thanks for the link Aaron.

Edit:
Thank you too Urbicide. I think that's the one I saw before. I'll get into them both when I get home from work.

Hot girls in bikini...I'll be dayuuuumm ...what took me so long to get me this one.....:greenchainsaw:

I know Randy and Cliff will be jealous me having all the fun with those girls...that' ll teach them for making me wear that silly goose hat and rookie shirt.

Jacob will fix me up with a nice mod for sure, and good ole Art will be bribed with some fine belgian beers for a razor sharp chain...Mark Heimann will not stand a chance in the race at the IA GTG... :givebeer:

to many beers tonight...LOLOLOL
