Entertained the thought of trading the nice, T&C muffler equipped 1-72 for that 440 but... nah!

What's T&C? I'd say the 440 has one up on the 1-72 because it does have an auto oiler. I believe that none of the 1-70 series saws have the auto oiler.

I also have a 650 geardrive saw that I plan to get around to soon. Has good compression, just need a bar and chain.

Town & Country muffler. Twist of the wrist sets a perforated screen over the muffler port, supposedly quieting the saw. Doesn't work all that well, but rare as hen's teeth.

Oh I remember seeing an ad someone posted on here before showing that muffler. Pretty neat, but I doubt it makes it quiet. lol

Changes the sound, if not the volume as the sales literature would have you believe.

This will be a tough challenge, since for it to be fair we would both have to run the same bar and chain and cut the same piece of wood. Other than that, I'm in.

Take videos too!! I have been wondering which had more balls, I would like to think 797 only cause that is what I have. Need a 50"+ piece of wood for that challenge so there is no question:cheers:.

All I have is a 36" bar. At the least we would both have to have the same lenth bar and a new out of the box chain, either full or skip, and a piece of the same kind of wood that's the same diameter.

Richard's not wrong in that video, just doesn't tell the whole story. I cite my source as JJ for this. The 125 is ported for torque, not horsepower. With 72" bars, the 125 will probably beat the 797, but with the 36" bars, the 797 will light up the 125.

That 895/101 is an answer to a question nobody asked...

Whoever wins better know what they're doing with it.

Geardives are all about torque and the kart engine, so I understand, is a high rpm screamer. Not a truck engine.

From what I recall, the 380/440 does not share the aggressive porting of the S250, nor does the 660 based upon P/Ns.

I must say, it is a question I have been contemplating for a while now. I sure hope I am able to answer it. This in no way legitimizes it as a question that NEEDS answering though. I went past the need threshold with my saws miles back.

I've thought about it too, but I just couldn't make it work in my mind... Like cramming a Ferrari V12 in an F350. Unique, but not "right."

I think I can shave a half pound off the 850 by switching to another muffler, saw will probably run cooler too.

You probably already know that if you have the 800 style muffler, you'll need some cowling off an older saw to direct the air flow if you replace the muffler. You might also be better served with the older starter cover if yours has the 800 style. It can be done - McCulloch pm 800 Chainsaw Chain saw - eBay (item 290533900375 end time Feb-19-11 14:45:53 PST)
