Well Mac whores, (me included...:)) I went out to the barn and actually looked at all of the 790 parts that I received from a very kind member here... I had a lot of trouble holding back the drool... just like when I got the 850... :msp_drool:

I slobbered all over the engine, it is clean now... :D The quantity of drool has risen exponentially due to the Pro Mac 850 running and a 790 sitting in a box waiting to run... :)

Still haven't cleaned the workbench yet, as the car still needs a little electrical work, a new cap and rotor, and plugs... hopefully it won't need injector seals too... :censored: vacuum leaks. :bang: It's bad when you can't fix it with carb cleaner...

I will be trolling feebay for the piston rings, and also will (at some point) take an inventory of what I have and what else I need to get this beast together... so that when I'm done farting around with the car, the saw should have everything I need to assemble it.

As for the guy that sent me this beast... thanks!! You deserve a beir. PBR only, though... ;)

You're not through. There's a heat shield and a reed plate coming.

PBR, maybe. GTS, yes.

No governor on S250s, that's idle circuit flatback action. Some guys hate it, I love it.

My flatbacked 440 doesn't have that self blipping idle circuit. What's the difference between your carb and mine?

In terms of parts, probably nothing. Play around with the barrel spring tension on the throttle plate vs. your idle and idle speed setting and it should do it. For the record, mine responds exactly as it should throughout the range and I have no fear of frying it the way it is set and it'll idle like that all day. If anything, the high side is a touch fat.

Joe - Look on the bottom of the saw, most likely you will find it stamped 1-42 or maybe 1-43. Unless someone has removed the lower brace from the rear handle, the 1-42 and 1-43 were the only ones sold that way.

125 PSI is not bad for one like that. Chances are the piston is bushed rather than needle bearings for the small end of the rod but lots of saw ran lots of hours that way.

Mark

It is indeed a 1-42. The top cover is in good shape. Any info on these saws?

Mitchell, I don't think the original carburetor on the 440 has the throttle governor, that feature was added on later saws starting in 1965, the last year of production on the 440 was 1964.

That's close to the right story anyway based on the work shop manual supplement 63328.

Thought I'd post my Mac 10-10A on here:

My grandfather gave me this saw last year. He used it for years for the occasional job. He said that he did all kinds of abusive stuff to it in the past, like pouring in motor oil, etc. :msp_ohmy: But it still runs and works! I just fixed the gas cap venting so it stays running now. I think the chain is on it's last legs, but I have no experience with that.

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with having the pull start on the left, but a setup to have a pull start on the right also?

Even though I have been traveling a lot over the past 4 weeks, I've somehow managed to add some saws to the collection. I'll post up some more photo's in a day or two assuming I finally get home tomorrow night.

From e-bay I bought and received an SP70, and my brother found the 33 that I posted a few pages back, those are already waiting at home.

In addition to those two, I have a 790 (working?) and 73 (stuck) coming from e-bay, a 55/Super 55 coming from Colorado along with several extra bars, I picked up a Pro Mac 60 over by Indianapolis this week thanks to a tip from a fellow AS member, and today I added 4: Pro 10-10 with a brake, 1-46 with full wrap handle bar and McCulloch carburetor with choke, 1-72 with a couple of broken bits and a 24" roller nose bar in very good condition, and a 4-30 that is either stuck or the starter cable is jammed. There were four additional 10 Series bars with this last lot, two new and two used, all sprocket nose.

Now I just need to spend a few weeks at home to try and get them sorted out, once I get the 73 from Eccentric cleaned up and going. I also have an SP81 mostly disassembled that is begging to get fixed as well, seems to have great compression, and a MM6 with a leaking oiler...

Oh the list just goes on and on.

Joe - Acres sight has the spec's, send me a PM with your e-mail address if you want an IPL and a copy of the work shop manual.

If you look at my post above, you will see I found a 1-46 this week with full wrap handle bar, pretty cool old saw. Compression seems low but it was promoted as having been run recently and the fuel in the tank did not look too bad.

Thanks a lot mark. I will get you my email. I looked on acres and saw that its 80ccs. From the 60s Id guess? It will be a fun project.

I'm with you on that. I contacted the owner minutes after it was posted, had to go up into Orygun, didn't have time to follow it up.
Atleast it is one of us, it could have gone to a feepay part stripper.

Talking with the fellow, seems like he would have let it sit on the shelf for a year waiting for someone to pick it up before he would ship it out. Just lucky for me it is within easy driving distance along the tollroad. Can't wait to get it in my hands.

Just look at the paint on the bar, I'll bet that's the origonal chain too.

Saw has a second bar, 28", and 2 more chains along with what you see in the picture. He says it was just used around a family acreage, bought it from the original owner. It is supposed to be a runner. If you listen very carefully, you may hear me fire it up wherever I meet the guy along the Indiana/Michigan border.

Fixed it for you Mark. You've gotten so many 'new' Macs and parts that you can't keep the model numbers straight. That's a good 'problem' to have...:jester:

Deffinately a Keeper. Man i'm jealous. When you get the thing home we gotta see some chips fly.

Well, I looked on fleabay and no one has rings for the 790 as of now... anyone know of another source for NOS rings or new manufacture rings?

Thanks

just struck a deal with a fellow a couple hours from me for this super 550. Underneath the sawdust, it looks pretty darned clean. Nicer than my other super.

Unfortunately work comes first, so i'll be picking it up after the weekend.
