vintage Mac

I enjoy pulling the throttle on a hot rod hi-revving mac as much as anyone here, but I still break our the work horse when it gets down and dirty. The ol one-53. I bought this one from a dude look'n for beer money on a Friday nite. Just luck, I was getting gas there. Its not very pretty, but its got spark and fresh mix in the tank, so I'm hoping the fuel system is still OK. So we cut a deal, 20 bucks or so, and I'm off to the shop to see what I just purchased. It was the middle of November, 40 and raining, pitch black at 4:30, so I really couldn't see the real condition of the saw. Once home, I popped the muf and it looks real good inside, nice spark, so I pulled off the POS chain and bar so I could give her a yank on my steel welding table. After a couple of pulls she pops and rips the handle right out of my hand. OK, It's got comp. A couple of more pulls and she roars to life, thank god for the tilly, I had it close to tune in a minute or so. The saw is Quite rough around around the edges but ALWAYS starts and runs, with attitude. Its my goto saw for the dirty stuff, cause I can't hurt the thing, and I'll prob never wear it out in my lifetime. Sorry just reminiscing about my One-53.

The 1-52's and 1-53's were work horses indeed. 87 cc (Acres has it wrong on this one), needle bearings in the piston (earlyer models had bushings), full wrap bars, and plenty of torque.

I like the way they look with the long, sleek, black top cover.

Last week I picked up a 1-46 that had a full wrap bar and the same carburetor as the Super 250 (flat back with a choke), not quite as nice looking with the short cover on the air filter but a neat old saw indeed.

77 if it is the standard wide bar, narrow bars like the Pro Mac may use 75 or 76 depending on the bar mount and amount the chain has "stretched".

This is the standard wide bar like found on the larger macs with the larger 3/8" studs. Thanks for the numbers.

Holy Cow Mark!!! have you ever done a complete inventory of all your Saws? Might take you a week LOL.

Mark, that 1-72 looks like it cleaned up real nice, have you put it in some wood yet?
Paccity, nice score on the 250, you wont be dissappointed, lotsa noise, smoke and grunt.
I spent all day walking thru the Portland Auto swap meet, and came home with 3 saws. All I can tease is one is 6 cubes and yellow, and made in '64, '65. So far it's ripped the handle out of my grip just a few times, and it does run. I'm jammed at work so I can't do pics just yet.

Sounds like you did ok at the swap meet.
I would guess you found yourself a 790 or 890

After a 290 mile round the Super 550 is in my hands. It is every bit a nice as advertised with dynamite compression (the tollroad isn't really the place to fire it up and it was too dark when I got home). The only flaws are a taped-up starter handle and a repair on the clutch cover by the lower dog mount. The seller sent more photos a day ago and here is the one that shows everything with the saw. The saw is in even better shape than the photo suggests.

Good for you Chris. Looks wonderful. Looking forward to a vid of it barking in anger.

Let me know if you need another clutch cover, I might have one here.

I think the 660 bars are wider on the driveside.
