hey guys... I found a mac 3200 near me that a guy is selling for $50... any thoughts? I've seen pictures and it's definatly in really good condition... externally at least. Would this little mac be better than my poulan wild thing that I keep taking in for $40 of service every year?

Thanks for any help!

This some form of reverse psychology, Homelites in the Mac thread instead of Macs in the Homelice thread?

Nice saw, Mr. RandyMac. Very nice.

Thank you Jeff!
Eh, those Homelite guys are slackers, hardly got a rise out of them. The old Homie was truly appreciated here. The 2100 is still in my livingroom:hmm3grin2orange:

it's a cheap throwaway plastic saw just like the wild thing. Mcculloch hasn't made anything but those since the mid 90s.

Imho not worth it. If you want a dependable saw for trimming up around the house you probably should look at something orange and quit spending more than that wild thing is worth every year just to get it going in the spring.

Thanks for the reply. The wild thing is on it's way out. I hate that darn thing after buying my 6401 last spring. Right now I am trying to find a good limbing and triming saw. Can't afford another $200-$300 saw right now so i have been keeping an eye on local CL posts for something older and more trustworthy than the poulan. My dad bought that poulan pro (yellow junk) saw last summer for $40... I might try tinkering with it to see if it will run and then ditch it on CL with the wild thing... I have been thinking that if I sell the 2 poulans for $25-$40 each I'd have some extra cash for a new limber. Plus I have been thinking of buying some of the other big saws on CL (the older ones); that guys like to fix for fun on here and part them out or just resell the whole power head on ebay to make a few bucks for a dolmar 3410... I don't know if I have time to do that though...

If ya send the WT to me, I'll properly 'dispose' of it by porting the hell out of it and muff modding it... :D

-------------------------------------------

I am working on the 790 today, the cylinder has been through its second boiling, and now simply needs to be wiped down and sprayed with carb cleaner, then dried out with compressed air.

I will then measure the bore and see if it's consistent all the way from the top to the bottom. And clean off the workbench (again...:bang:) and work on it.

Forgot to get that set of rings off of feebay... :bang:

Ah, I rarely fire on all 8 cylinders... more like 4-6... sometimes limping along on 2 or 3... :dizzy:

No. Still a pain to work on, but the PM6 is a classic, the later "wire loop handle for the oiler" Minimacs were a classic "fail" IMHO.

Thanks. I cut my teeth on Power MAC 6s as a teenager. Many years later, I purchased my first MAC - a PM510. When you could crank it, it ran great but it was so cheaply made and such a source of frustration I have no desire to own one again. On the other hand, I am a little sentimential about the Power MAC 6. But I don't want to spoil the sentiment if they really aren't good little saws. Ron

Why do you boil the cylinder?

I don't think you could find anything more reliable than an old Poulan 25. I've had one (actually three now) that I don't think I could tear up if I wanted to! Around here they're as close as your nearest flea market, usually for cheap.

With a little dish soap, and light boiling/heating up of it, that crud comes off a lot easier, and most of it comes off and goes into the water.

Most important thing to remember is go easy... I imagine if you boiled the hell out of it, you'd end up with sludge in the pan... like RandyMac said about some Rambler carb...

Even 30 minutes in hot/almost boiling/boiling water helps a lot in further cleaning efforts... for me anyways. I think it helps that crud loosen up and makes it easier to scrape it off without scratching the cylinder fins and the like.

In the end, it really doesn't matter how a cylinder is cleaned, as long as it doesn't get harmed in the process...

Ultrasonic, by far, would be the fastest, especially with paint thinner in the container that you have the part in.

Sometime, I will be getting one of those ultrasonic cleaners at HF... the big and small ones, actually. Small for small parts and carbs, and big for cylinders, pistons, connecting rods, etc.

Have you guys been following the SP105 on Ebay?

McCulloch Super Pro 105 Chainsaw - eBay (item 300555577541 end time May-15-11 17:08:51 PDT)

Bidding is out of control.... Doesn't run, missing bottom of handle, missing oiler button, missing starter grill, handlebar is bent, and no Bar or chain. It is already at $107 with 6 days left. Good thing about it is that the clutch cover, tank, filter cover, and muffler cover look fully intact. I was thinking about getting it for parts, but I think it is going to get a bit pricey for me.

Damn, it's not fair that they have yellow fever too!! :(

Sometimes I wonder if it would've been better to simply say these saws suck and need work all the time so the prices would drop... it seems like everyone that is not a member here is reading this thread and deciding they need to buy a Mac!!!! :dizzy:

We never hear about the Macs that are picked up by guys outside our circle... :(

All the big McCs are out of control. I saw a dogged out sp125 with a starting bid of like 899.00!!! Same for 75s and 76 stihls..

HOLY ####!!

People are going nucking futs!! :dizzy:

I remember hearing the 'lowly' 80cc Macs are pulling 500 or more bucks!!! WTF are those people thinking?

I think Mark may have told too many people overseas about this harmless little hobby of collecting Macs...:msp_razz:

I simply show them a photo of me with my wife, one of my grandchildren, and one with the twin SP125's sporting 32" bars.

Nature takes over after that like it did today in Brasil, all they want to talk about is the saws...one guy said "well, you have a unique hobby..."

The plant I am working in the first part of this week has a wood fired boiler, were not talking about some little home heating unit either, it probably must generate something like 50,000 to 60,000#'s per hour of steam. They load the wood on a conveyor, and as demand increased the conveyor speeds up to feed the fire. There are three large trucks on sight to remove the ashes, again an automated system with screw conveyors hauling the ashes, and two of the three trucks have most of the paint burned off the side of the box. I'll try to remember to take a few photo's tomorrow.

To keep this on track, they don't use McCulloch chain saws, mostly orange and grey ones from Germany.

Mark

Picked up something else new today...

I believe it's a 10-10S it has a decompression valve, but the ID tag is there, but looks like it was worn off. The air filter cover was replaced with a different one. Saw is in good condition and complete, will be in great shape after a cleaning. It should be a runner, it has spark and compression.

Chris

Cleaned it up a little bit today, threw a splash down the carb and it fired on the first pull. Idles great, just needs some high end adjustment and a sharp chain. Could use some more cleaning. Not a bad little saw!
