Mc Culloch Super 250

I should have this one next week, hopefully it runs as nice as it looks,

Well done on the Super 250. I was keeping an eye on that one myself - It looks like a nice old saw, and I hope you have alot of fun with it. You don't see that many of the Super 250 saws around, so it is a nice find.

Regards,

Chris.

that one looks like a real nice one. Just turn the muffler outlet the other direction or the bark will bite you. I got my chops busted by other Mac guru's for the same issue on mine, and these lowlifes made me serve drinks for a while in the super 250 club...grrrrr :hmm3grin2orange:

Guess it's your turn now !

:ices_rofl: Thanks for the tip, it's hot enough here without more exhaust heat.

Check this out... check out the size difference between the HL low inlet I got from Jacob, and the Flatback that was in the 640.

HL's are big carbs... but the Flatback is massive in comparison!
The Tilly is on the left and the Flatty is on the right. :)

Those are some good close-up comparison pictures Gary. Have you ever successfully rebuilt a Mac flatback carb before? I have one that I just purchased a kit for and would like to know how difficult it is to tune and what are the starting points for the L and H screws. Oh, and do you know what the little box behind the flatback does? It has a piece of foam in it with a wire retainer. It also has a line running from the carb to it. Oh, and why does the fuel pump diaphram have gaskets on both sides of it? It looks like that would keep the petals on the diaphram from sealing good.

The little foam dealio that is held in with a wire retainer is a "Fuel Collector"... Mine is missing the foam.

I have never rebuilt one... this is the first time I've had one in my hands. This saw came from the East Coast. Most of the West Coast saws were refitted with a Tilly HL. The loggers out here in the day hated that Flatty.

Kart guys love them. The diaphram in that Flatty is big enough to prolly run a small dirt bike, or cart.

I would say that you could prolly put the kit in it and set the H and L screrws to what an HL would be set at. But not sure. Gonna be some tweakin' there for ya. I don't have a service manual for the Flatty like I do the HL...

Thanks. Do you know the purpose of the fuel collector?

The IPL shows a little hose coming off of the side of the carb and into the bottom of the collector so fuel could be absorbed by the foam. I'm guessin' it sucked raw fuel built up in the throat of the carb, and then sent it to the foam where it would evaporate...

Or... the foam would catch the "spitback" from the carb and then the vacuum caused by the carb suckin' air past the fitting where the hose attaches into the carb throat would suck the raw fuel collected in the foam to be burnt in the combustion chamber...

Just my 2 theories... :)

My saw had no hose from the carb to the collector, and is missing the foam. The collector box, and retainer are still there. But the saw had been messed with a little before I got it. So the cat that had it could have removed it.

Yeah the flatback is a good performer when tuned properly and with fresh diaphragms. They're really good at high revs... those Mac engineers knew what they were doing, but it was designed at a time when gas was really gas and had lead in it...

So this HL-63 is going in your 640?

Jacob, What would be the ideal tilly to put
into a 797. I have a HL63 and HL19 and the
venturi looks small. Is there a better carb than
these 2. What size is the 227 that you have in yours.

Thanks for any info.

The 227 was the stock carb on the 090 for a while, so it'll flow quite a bit of gas. I haven't measured the venturi on it but I will later today and compare it to some modern racing carbs like the 334a & b and a 358. I think I also have a 360 here.

Unless you would think it would be better suited for the 797... The 797 has an HL-19E in it...

What do you think mang?

Gary

Hmm, that's a tough call since I haven't been inside the 19E. I know those early carbs were decent but temperamental. Let me do some measuring today and report back.

I could send the 19E to you to have you look at it, and see what you think if you don't have one around there. I'll pay shipping both ways.
