I've been following the chainsaw forum for about four months now. Here's my story.
I build bows, (archery), as a hobby. Last fall i decided to get ready for a wood, (yew), gathering up in the pacific northwest in the coming spring. Bought a used chainsaw, 036. I'll get to the Mac part, bear with me. I cut post and poles up in Seely Lake Montana about 22 years ago and we used the Stihls so that's how I decided on that. It was a lot of fun tearing it apart and cleaning it up so I thought I'd buy another big saw to work on. I was looking for a 070 and came across Mr Big Saw, (Sawbones). From him I purchased a 106 lightning. While researching that, I found this site. At first I thought I wanted one of all makes. I got a Poulan 306, then a Homelite 955, then a Mac 250. The 250 Mac was a beautifull piece of engineering. Really started reading all I could find on here about Mccullochs. Then got a Super 250, a 1-43, a 1-86 and just picked up a CP 125. I'll stick with the Mccullochs from now on. Here I was, trying to downsize so I could spend my retirement in Mexico, fishing, and I've picked up this habit of buying chainsaws :msp_confused:View attachment 225231

you've come to the right place for support for sure. but if you want help to rid yourself of CAD so you can retire fishing, you should run away as fast as you can!! the disease gets worse when you get around like minded folks.

If you're wanting a bigger Poulan of that vintage, I'd recommend a 245 instead of the 306. I have both and the 245 is about 74cc while the 306 is about 59cc I think. Both are good saws IMO.

I thought the 797 was the the star.

No 797's or 795's in that movie Steve. The 'stars' were a CP-70, a 740 or 790 (no DSP valve), and a CP-125. Ther may have been a 450, 550, or Super 550. Somebody here (I can't remember who....damn CRS) sez they saw a front tank Mac with the 'mailbox' style AF cover in one scene. That would make it a 450/550/S-550. I haven't spotted it myself yet.

That pic looks familiar Ric. I've had it as my profile pic for over a year. Windthrown had it as his avatar pic for years before that. I don't recall seeing a signed copy however. Pretty cool!

That's funny, Aaron. I've noticed it on your profile but never looked at it closely and had just assumed it was you until you posted your pic over in the Mtngal thread and I found out you weren't remotely that good looking.

740

Greetings, I apparently have one of them on my way to me, currently set up with only an 18" bar, but not sure if still running 404 or if its been swapped to run 3/8. Finally got a 6 cuber ! even if it is only 6.05 ci, its bigger than my 288, but currently not going as it 'stopped with a clunk at idle between cuts' so we will see what it looks like when it gets here.

I have a 30" (?) McColloch 'Fortified Tip' bar here but there are no markings on it as to a model/mount or a DL count and I do not kow if this will fit the saw anyway?

Any ideas as to if it will fit the 740 (Acres site does not state what mount pattern the 740 is) and what the DL count would be for 404 (or 3/8). Bar is 30 & 1/4 inches from tip to start of bar mount slot.

Ta,

Carl

Ta,

Carl we'd have to see the tail end of that bar to tell you whether or not it'd fit the 740. 30" cut length bar should take 93-94DL of .404 on these saws when using a .404-7 sprocket/rim. Depends on the exact bar however. My 31" cut length Cannon RN fits my 740 and 790 fine with 95DL of .404 on a 7 pin rim. Same chain loop fits my 30" cut length Cannon RN on my Homelite XP1020 with a .404-8 rim.

This'n here ought to look mighty handsome, then.

Very, very stylish looking, I'm sure

There I am, in all my glory.

Duke Thieroff, noun, A tall and gaunt individual, smells of petroleum and petroleum distillates. Generally filthy and wielding a chainsaw of some type. Brands don't particularly matter, only power. Wears worn out clothes and wakes before dawn. A terrible human being to know and be known by.

At least I know how to type and spell, I guess.

CP 125 rod bolts

I'm tearing into a CP 125 and before I head to the auto parts store, what is the name of the socket I need, and size, for those funky connecting rod bolts?
Thanks
Dan

You need the special Mcculloch socket for those rod bolts.
Theres a couple kinds, One is a 1/4 drive socket and then
there is a L shaped wrench you can use but can't use with
a torque wrench. They can be found on ebay all the time.
