I have a McCulloch 7-10A that I completely restored a number of years ago (of which I got a lot of help from this thread) which I had to put an ignition chip in. It has the Tillotson carb with the high jet adjustment only. The issue I have with this saw is that it runs very nicely but will only rev to 6000rpm which seemed low. Turning out the H jet (more fuel) bumped the RPM up maybe 500rpm.

I recently picked up another 7-10A with original points and has a SDC 44 carb with adjustable L and H jets. It runs very well and a quick rev was showing in the 9000 rpm.

Any ideas on what may limit the revs on a chainsaw like this. It doesn't seem to be starving for fuel as it revs crisply to the 6000 rpm and doesn't bog down but the H jet adjustment did increase the RPM a little. It has a NOS OEM exhaust so i doubt that would be clogged up in any way. It has new rings but surely tight rings wouldnt impact it like this.

I know its hard to diagnose anything over the internet but just curious if anyone else has had similar issues?

It could be that you chip does not have the necessary advance for the 7-10. Static timing on almost all of the McCulloch saws was 26° BTDC.

If would be easy enough to swap the carburetor between the two but I don't think you will find a big difference. Venturi size and throttle bore should be the same on those two carburetors.

Hey Guys. Anyone interested in these two old Gems?? Mac 1-40 & 1-51. Both are complete bar & chains. Both have compression & Spark Was told they both ran to cut downed trees a little over a yr ago. Dont know if thats true or not. $350 for pair Pus shipping or local pickup in northern MN 56634.
Would for 80's Poulans. Would like a Big case 4200 4400 4900 5200 or 5400
I have several 3400's a couple hopped up quite a bit 3800 and a 4000 too

Bob - the 600 Series use the same spike as the PM 10 Series saws. In fact the 600 Series saws are set up so that you can outfit them with dual spikes if you wish. McCulloch PN 214208 is a kit with two spikes and hardware. I have NOS kits and used spikes if you can't find one elsewhere.

The individual packed spikes for the 10 Series are PN 91967.

There are good reproductions out there as well but be careful, some were made with the 4-1/8" hole spacing to fit the older 10 Series covers.
