Milling Picture Thread

Did these on an asphalt parking lot. My knees are on ice right now.

Big end 48” wide
Small end 39” wide

7’ long

Brought home 7 pc’s. Customer took one and we called it even. He said it is Burr Oak. I dont know bout that. Definitely looks like a type of white oak anyway. Decaying in it in places.

I. Planned on drilling the bar but wanted to run a drip first to see how I like it.

So its dripps on the bar just off the chain. It works really good.

I noticed a difference in how hot the chain gets.

I’ll probably leave it as a drip. Works well. The 3120 has a really great oiler. Loads of it make past the nose. But the aux really did cool the chain down. It stays “wet” looking vs when it is hot and the saw dust is cooked onto it.

This bar tho…..amazing. WELL worth the price.

i appreciate it, i have a 3120 and a 5 foot husky bar. been thinking about adding the AUX ouker!

It was only 44” on the big end. Not 48” Tape measure are hard for people to use im learning.

Its was not that bad. Back the trailer up to it. Yes, I mill by myself only. I do have a winch now if I need it, but this one was not to bad loading.

Yes there was metal in this one. I decide to mill it anyway. One nail found and 2 bolts.

Bad day for the saw tho. I think i cracked the muffler. Had to stop. Ill go back to get the rest of the log. Got just past 1/2 way. 6 slabs so far at 2.25” . Checking out the saw today.

White Oak today. Cut at 18’ long. Can’t remember the diameter. Maybe 36” on the big end. Was a woods oak. Had beautiful grain. Only on spot with metal that had dissolved so no chain damage. Figured it was from a tree stand.

Slab in the picture is 4” thick. Did one of those and a few at 6”. Customer said he could pick them up with his lil tractor. He could the 4”er but not the 6”ers. They are currently laying on the ground on 4x4’s next to the log as he wished.

After trimming to mill
51-1/2” wide on the big end.
83-1/2” long

3” thick slabs.

Lesson for the day. I need new wedges. I want to make some that are the same thickness as my kerf. So the the space is held the same, or close anyway, at all points.

My red oak wedges have worked great. I made them from a slab from the first log I milled from my front yard. 36” diameter red oak. Ill see if I can find pictures of my first one.

Would shims used for installing/squaring door frames and windows work? I suspect you would have to double them to be thick enough, but a pack of 12 is just over $2.00

I actually use those a lot to shim my first cut ladder!!. If it was a snake it would have bit me. Should have thought of that!! Thanks... Iwill try. 2 of them is probably a bit much but CLOSE! Possibly perfect

Kerf on .404 should be about .33-.34 inches. So any 3/8" (.375) material (could make a bunch from plywood) that's faired down a little on one end with a sander should work well.

Totally. I just saw that number bandied about in the past on threads about actual kerf size of cuts, would assume it could always be a bit more than that. Should never be more than 3/8" though.

Wanted to start a thread that is solely for posting any pics you want to share regarding milling.

Here’s a few pictures of my setup. I’m really loving this 881. The .404 chain cuts very well and leaves a pretty good finish, I probably won’t even bother getting a ripping chain.

And here’s my checklist and cheat sheet I keep on my phone. There’s nothing more annoying than getting to your spot and you forgot one critical thing (like bar oil )

MS 170 - 3/8 pico sharpen with 4 mm

36 inch ripping chain 3/8 sharpen with 5.2 mm

MS 881 magnum - .404 pitch sharpen with 5.5 mm (108 drive links 46 RS 108, 0.063 gauge)
