I'll start by saying that I don't have the saw in the shop yet. What the customer (ASE certified mechanic) has told me about his saw and what he has done trying to fix it and what he hasn't done. Mostly all that I would have done. IE: Compression, spark, pressure test, impulse tube, carb boot, carb rebuilt, metering diaphragm adjusted correctly, removed welch plug/s and cleaned carb with an ultrasonic cleaner etc.
When the saw arrives I will check compression, remove the muffler and check the cylinder and piston for scoring, will remove the flywheel and check the key for possible shear, check the carb to make sure the right metering diaphragm was used, meter the coil, check the coil ground circuit, check spark arrest screen, check carb mounting throat for cracks, etc. Personally, I hate following someone else's work but he is a friend so here we go. He is a fantastic auto and truck mechanic but I'm not quite sure about his ability with chainsaws. If anyone out there sees something I have missed, please chime in. I will post what, if anything, I find and if I can get it up and running. Thanks, OT

I was a GM and college trained auto technician when I started at a Stihl dealer. He told me"You may be a good auto tech, but you don' know anything about 2 strokes". He was right. That was 1981.
It has been a great learning experience.
The GM training came in handy when solenoids and fuel injection appeared on saws. Just a 1980s Iron duke with TBI.

I have a 27 HP Kohler apart. I'm a so,so, 2 stroke mechanic. At least I can pick them up.

Hell, I feel like I have been in a fight.

Not an EFI Kohler I hope.
Long story. It is a CV 740 , I think. Dealer replaced the pan gasket because of a leak. When the customer, my wife's best friends husband got it back, the governor did not work. So, the Scag dealer kept it 17 weeks and never repaired it. Somewhere in this story the Scag dealer caught the UPS man with his wife. So, he ordered some packages for his wife UPS and when the UPS man came in to deliver he killed him.
So, he lost the Scag dealership LOL.
Then the owner ran in to a guy who was a mechanic for Kohler and said they had broken the governor putting the pan back on. So, for $4000 they could replace the engine.

So, me being lead around by the reins pulled the engine and there is nothing wrong with it. Becomes clear once you flip it upside down. The linkage was hung on the cable tie that holds the wire going to the carb solenoid shutoff. Spring could not overcome it. Governor is fine. So, I put a new gasket on it. Have it back in the Scag.
Probably run it tomorrow. They made some curious mods to try and keep it from over revving, basically doing it with limiting how far the butterfly could open, but nothing to do with the governor.

It is a lot of parts, and they are all in a place that you need to be an octopus .
Something to do.

In the meantime, I went to the store this morning and they likely have 30 pieces of Stihl in for whatever.

I'll post a photo maybe Monday of what it looks like when the weather breaks.
