My brother asked me to ID this wood. I'm leaning towards Maple, maybe Sugar Maple. This log is about 10" diameter. It splits fairly easy with no stringiness. Sapwood looks like SM but heart is darker. Was also thinking maybe Mockernut Hickory - until I split it. No leaves available.
Any ideas? I cut and planed a piece to see the sapwood grain and end grain. Last picture shows it with a piece of Kiln-dried Sugar Maple.
Almost forgot, the noodles smell rather sweet and pleasant. The wood is also quite dense - but it is green.
