Oops, I just posted my question in the wrong forum. 2nd try.
I just bought a nice 028av super from the family of a old man that died. (Sorry for him). Anyway the saw will run only as long as I pour mix into the air-filter.
Looking down into the compartment that houses the air-filter there is a nipple on the lower left side with nothing on it and a piece of small fuel line with a screw inside laying in the bottom of the compartment.
Is this why my saw won't pick up mix? What connected to the nipple and where does it lead to from there?
I really need this saw to run. I've been using my old Ecco 610 evl for about 20 years , it's a 2 cyl and getting too heavy for me , I've gotten old!
Thanks !!

The fuel line with the screw in it is a vent as far as I know. I'm not overly familiar with 028s, but it should go on that nipple on the tank.

What made you decide to pour gas into your air filter? If it only runs like that, just on the surface it sounds like your carb isn't picking up fuel on it's own and by you force feeding it, it'll run. Does it start on it's own or do you have to pour gas in it to get it to start? Or is it just after you've got it running? There should be a nipple on the carb somewhere for the impulse line. It may be cracked, torn or removed. Check the carb itself. But the nipple you're seeing sounds like a tank vent.

Welcome to AS.

Hi Manfred,

Jeff is correct : the sticking out fuel line which you see is the tank vent, and is supposed to be like that. I have been working on my 028Super last week and know what you mean (I believe).

I suggest you take take the carb off and inspect the diaphragms, and let them sit in some fuel for a couple of hours. Also clean the carb inside while you are at it.

then, normal procedure for checking the saw (spark, carb functioning, etc.)
good luck ! A Famous Stihl dealer around here told me it is a nice solid saw.
check it out.

I would start with a carb kit and see if that solves your problem, you have acquired a great saw, tough as nails those 028s are.

Thanks a bunch for the replys. Can I just the nipple unconnected?
I had just gotten the saw and my first question was if it would run or not and that is why I poured mix into the carb.
It is getting ready to be real cold here for a few days so I'll get a chance to take the carb. off and inspect it. ( Probably will be more questions then ).

carb kit.

Where can I buy a carb. kit? I thought they didn't sell parts anymore for my saw.

The type of carb on that saw should be a walbro WT-16B, but please check.
the carb kits should be available with any Stihl dealer or on the net. I am not from the US but I am sure some other members will gladly give you a contact where to get them.
