Yesterday I received my Craftsman 358.355061 / Poulan 2300CVA. I gave it a quick look-over and the piston is a little scored on the exhaust side, which is no surprise since the seller listed it as probably having no compression. I'm guessing that someone worked on the saw because it's missing the sparkplug & AF, and the carb & airbox are nearly spotlessly clean. The tank is dry with no visual residue or gas odor.

When I went to feel the score marks on the piston, the piston rotated a little in the cylinder :(. I quess that I won't know more until the saw gets a full teardown.

Interesting note--I won this saw on feePay for $.99 + $18.99 shipping. I didn't think that my minimal bid would win it, but I don't mind because I would have been willing to pay about the same maybe even more (keep reading!) if I had found it on CL or a local flea market, garage sale, etc. In the listing photos the bar appears to be new/like new, ditto for the chain (safety :() which the seller did send with the saw. The seller forgot to include the bar, and has since shipped it separately. Even thought this auction probably cost him money, he didn't try to get out of sending the bar.

Couple Poulans available in my area, a 4200 and a 6900. $125 and $200 respectively.

I like my 3400 and figure I should add some more classic green muscle to my herd.

Thoughts?

After running the 4200 and one like the 6900 you would be crazy not to add those 2 if wanting classics. I'm just not into reeds.

We must be shopping the same areas.

I pass the older ones to the guys that are into them. 4200 $125 or best offer with 2 bars 28" 20" Poulan 4200 69cc chain saw
Poulan 6900 $200 http://erie.craigslist.org/grd/3399780085.html

Not putting in the CL's area here for the vultures just wanting to buy and flip saws. :msp_wink:

Those are *very nice* deals. Heck, just a 28" d176 mount bar would be a nice score.

Good news.

Could someone tell me what saw is this?I think it is either a 4200 or a 4900 but i am not sure. The picture of the decal is really blur.

Poulan 18" Petrol chainsaw spares and repairs | eBay.

Today finaly came the saw.It is a 4200 and i am very happy with it.This saw is my first "counter vibe series" saw and i am amazed.Excellent machine.A little heavy i can tell but perfect. Can't believe how much power it has.

Well some informations for the saw.The seller was telling the truth. The p/c looking like new and the compression is extremelly high. From the litle i search it,it only needs a recoil pulley(i have something on my mine.I will try tomorrow to fix it,it just slips sometimes),an air filter and a very very good cleaning.I replace the fuel line, put some fresh mix in it and it fired up on the 10th pull and after that it fires on every first pull. Before i take it,i was thinking to replace some parts such as seals, carb diaphragms,to clean it inside for the case of some wood dust but now i am on dilemma.I am afraid to disassemble it because i am new to this series of saw and also i know that gaskets are NLA plus that the saw working perfect.Tell me your thoughts.

I believe that air filters for this series are like hunting gosts, right?

Kostas. Good find. The carb kits are easy to come by. Tillotson HS series, Kit is RK-23HS.

If it does have a worn out filter look at this post as they are rare.
Some good ideas from Modifiedmark, OhioGregg and Warped5 on saving the filters

You should be able to make gaskets if you need to. I have a tracing of the oil pump gasket if you need to make one of those.

I don't have a 4200 IPL but unitl you can get one here is one for the 5200 which should be pretty close.

Did you get your parts? If not, they are likely still on the ship.

Thanks Tim.I don't worry about the carb kit,i have allready 2 RK-23HS kits. The problem is the gaskets.I will probably replace the carb kit tomorrow, clean the carb and will see.I don't fell like to run a chainsaw without knowing the condition of the internal parts. Thanks for the IPL,i will tell you if i need the tracing for the oil pump gasket, for now the oil pump is working fine.

Sorry i didn't tell you about the parts. The parts arrived a couple of days ago. Thanks a lot Tim.

Actually they show up with a bit of regularity foe the 4200 and 5200 on eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-Bay here. You just have to dig DEEP to get one.
The ones for the 8500 style saws are a bit harder to find.
