Thanks guys  . I hope to get a chance to call and talk to someone next week before I place a big restocking order.

I put that bar on my Craftsman/Poulan 3400 today. Turned out I had to grind down the paint inside the bar stud slot to get the bar on. It would go over the threads on the bar studs, but not over the shoulder where the bar rides. If they had masked off the inside of that slot before powder coating the bar, it might have gone right on, but as it was I had to take the dremel to that slot so the bar would slide on.

Just a heads-up.

Got to run the 71-A today again and its running great now. Timing advance perked it up a little bit more.

Was running it in the shop when Mike told me to get in front of it while he reved it up and watch the exhaust. It was kinda cool so we tried to caputure in in the dark. I thought it would show up better but neither of us could be accused of being camera men either. :msp_biggrin:

Its kinda cool though you can see the bridge in the ehaust port pretty good.

Cameraman aside, I've always had a penchant for things that glow in the dark..

Way back when, we ran 12" zoomies on the circle track "stocker". A cool blue flame (think gas stove) under load was good, orange was not. But, two stroke cycle is likely very different.

You can see the exhaust valve on a SB Chebby running out the ports. And, no, you won't warp the valves.

Everybody had to take the 8500 out for a spin.

The 71A: Don't tell Mark some Remington is the loudest saw built, because he'll trot this thing out and demonstrate otherwise.

Today

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year guys. While you were all likely having fun today I was stripping wall paper. For me, akin to being buried naked up to my neck in an ant hill on a hot day.

None the less, enjoy this evening and the whole of 2013.

new to me 25 cva

Hi all.

I picked up a 25 CVA of of CL this past weekend. The owner stated it ran a when he last used it, 5 yrs ago. It needs a good cleaning at the very least. The chain is toast. Bar is OK. Probably could use a spark plug, fuel line and a carb kit. We will see. It looks to be in better shape than the 20 I rebuild was.

I measured the chain and believe it is .375", 0.050", low profile, with 52 drive links (that I am sure of!) Can someone confirm that is the factor spec chain for these saws? I don't think the sprocket was ever changed out to be something other than factory.

Last question: It looks like there are two tapped holes where a felling spike should be. Did these have an option for an inside spike?

Thanks!

PS, will post some pics once I start working on it.

14" bar. Very common if not factory. Have a banana bar from one of these and thats the chain length.

Felling spikes I've seen. Back in the day it was not uncommon for this to be someones one saw plan. Right Mike?

They guy I bought it from said he used to use it to do all his firewood back in the day.......

I used to use an 024 to do all my fire wood and those were some long days!

Guess he is running a few different Stihls now and didn't use this one any more.

That should be the factory original pitch/gauge on the CVA model. Some of the earlier 25/S25DA's used 1/4" pitch and later switched to lo pro. I've never seen a CVA with 1/4" pitch.

Leave it to a Canadian to equate wallpaper removal with getting naked.

Happy New Year to you, Tim!

It would amaze you what a determined individual and an S25 can accomplish in an afternoon!

Yes those holes in the front were for a spike, they were a option. I have a few nos spikes here for them.

Right Steve no 1/4 pitch on a CVA or and I'm thinking it was never standard on a "S" 25 either. It was only on the early 2.1 25's.

The early "S" 25's did come with a 14" bar but later only with a 16". I'm fairly certain the CVA only came from the factory with a 16" bar.

Chaps in the truck again? :poke:

Nope, laying on top a tool box in the shop.

I used to be that determined individual.
