Last years repair of my 3400 now 3800 did not end well with the bar studs spinning in the PTO case. Previous owner put in a crooked helicoil and bolt...not pretty or effective. I ordered a stud repair kit 530030039, but the project stalled. :bang:

I had kept an eye on ebay for not expensive complete cases or the pto side. There seemed to be mostly flywheel halves or too much money....why? is there a trend here with bad bar studs killing these cases?

Well I finally lucked out and got 5 nice complete cases with cranks, 2 green 3 red....$25 for the lot of 5 +14 s/h. All look way WAY nicer than my old original, 2 look almost new. :blob2:

I see that I wasn't the only one watching those, even though I currently have no need for them (isn't CAD, great? ;). Congrats on snagging them, you got a great deal. I used to get good feePay deals on Jonsered(s) saw bundles, but now days most folks separate the saws. Those were also the days when Poulan & Craftsman saws sold really cheap, even the really good ones, but at that time I didn't know much about Poulan saws.

At one Poulan :msp_thumbdn: was dirty word here on AS .

Listen, it takes a large head hold a large brain.:givebeer:

A good source tells me I'm still waiting on those parts from you.:msp_rolleyes:

Let me think......ouch, this really hurts.......it has something to do with a Poulan TH saw & a couple of Skil 16xx saws. Shoot me a PM reminding me of what I owe you (some 3400 parts???? and a couple of Craftsman 16" bars????).

This afternoon I added a Poulan Pro 295 FarmHand to the collection. The fellow who sold it is in the tree business, and a customer gave it to him, but he runs all Stihls and had no use for it. I was hoping to meet him, but he was out when I arrived.

The 295 is a little dirty, but appears to be low-hours. I can clearly read PoulanPro FarmHand 20" on the probably original bar and I'd be willing to bet the safety chain is original, only a few minor scratches, and the bar nuts have no rounding. Gas tank is dry, no varnish, doesn't have the nasty old gas smell. Compression seems good, I'll test it with fuel tomorrow.

Once I get the dig cam charged, I'll get some photos posted, & will also take some of the 4620AVHD for comparrison.

Throw a 16" b&c on it, mm it, and you will have a sweet little runner that can hold its own.

A 20 inch bar and mm makes for a mean limbing saw. Just make sure to keep the muffler on 295 tight. I agree they can hold there own and even out perform other saws in the 46cc range.

5500 in the house!

The brown truck finally made a stop at my house today and delivered the Poulan 5500 that I bought last month. I found this one about an hour away from the $25.00 5200 that I recently bought. No bargain on this saw, but I wanted one after seeing the one Chris had at the GTG in October. The seller was reluctant to ship, after several conversations he agreed providing he could be certain my cashiers check was good. Old school fellow, so no Paypal option. He did a great job of packaging and the saw arrived intact. Here a a few pictures:

While I am not a Poulan afficianado, I do have a PP405 that currently has only 75 lbs compression. It is in the same range (cc-wise) as the 8500, but is from a later era.

Don't believe so. The PP405 is 65cc's whereas the 8500 has to be in the 80cc range. NOt sure of exact size but I know its over 75cc's. Get a ring for the PP405 and check P&C. Surprised it will start at 75cc's.

3400xp

I was talking with Brian this morning and he confirmed with a long time employee at the Poulan distributor (a guy that is still peed off at what Elux did to Poulan) in North Bay ON who says the 3400XP was a 4000 put together in the Markham plant and repainted orange. He said if you scrape off a bit of orange paint you will find green underneath.
That helps confirm that the Skil plant in Markham who was producing these saws were doing so from finished components coming in from the US.
I surely would like to find one of those. I seem to be on a saw find lucky streak, so who knows.
