245A Resurection Thread

Hey guys,
Not sure on the etiquette on this one, so I apologize in advance if I am not following protocol. I've been posting on and off in this thread for a while about a 245 I am working on... slowly, but surely. For my own reference, I started a dedicated thread to track my work and store information related to the project. The link is in my signature and below.

http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/236014.htm#post4315252

The reason I am posting in here, is because a few guys where interested in seeing pics of the process. All the pics will be in the other thread... including the ring gap filing done tonight!

You guys are great, but I'm easily distracted and need my own thread for a reference. Keeping up with all the other posts makes me :dizzy:

Gunk liquid wrench is top of the line when it comes to penetrating oil. I've learned 1st hand many times before doing the research.

I have not been on much lately. Been busy running the 245's and enjoying the MHL afterwards...I cut a lot of wood on a regular basis but don't get into posting a thread or picture every time I cut a stick like some do on here....;)

Hi John, Good to see ya on here again. Wanted to give you a heads up, in case you didn't catch it in the chainsaw forum. There is gonna be a GTG real close to your neck of the woods next month.

http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/234023.htm

I finally got into some wood the other day also. Been so wet in the woods this spring. My body sure feels it, yikes! Heck getting old. I also took down a Oak and a Ash at the edge of a woods, dropped them into the field, pulled the logs over to a dry area and will work on them at my leisure. LOL Aren't huge, but maybe can get my newer 5200 in one of them to see if it will cut wood. ;)

Gregg,

I have had good results with PB blaster and good old ATF. If you want to rush the process after getting the "lube" out and putting the penetrating stuff in warm up the solid area above the intake port with a propane torch. It will expand the cylinder into an egg shape and allow a path for the penetrant to start working

i have it soaking, i think i will strap the body of the saw down to a solid surface and strap the cylinder to a come-a -long and slowly apply pressure while heating the cylinder up over the weekend. I will let you guys know how it turns out.

PP-655 gaskets?

Working on the Big Dog.

Is there a place to buy a set of gaskets for a 655? Or, at least the crankcase gasket?

Yup, I make my own all the time but, getting the right thickness/material can be a crap shoot. Seems I never get a perfect fit.

I need y'alls input & advice regarding a Poulan 4400 purchase.

I purchased a Poulan 4400 via eBay. The seller listed it as a runner, only included one photo of the recoil side of the saw, but I decided to take a chance since the saw appeared to be in pretty good condition.

The bad:

1. When the saw arrived it was very poorly packed, someone crammed it into a just-barely-big-enough Stihl box with no padding at all (I'm surprised that the bucking spike and/or the rear handle weren't damaged). The 18" bar, which was supposed to be included per the eBay ad & photo, did not arrive with the saw. There is a tear in the box that is about the right size for a bar. I do not have a large stash of spare bars, although I do have a couple that I can use on the 4400.

2. The bottom of the box was soaked with oil, & the single strip of tape was starting to come undone. The bottom of the box was about ready to go.

3. The recoil cover is labelled 4400, the clutch cover is labelled 5400. This discrepancy wasn't mentioned in the ad, & the one photo in the ad was of the recoil side of the saw. This is no big deal for me, but IMO the seller should've mentioned it. BTW, I'm 90% sure that the saw is indeed a 4400.

4. There is some scoring on the intake side of the cylinder. I would need to remove the jug in order to give it a good inspection, which I'm not going to do on a saw that I might have to return.

5. My winning bid, $152.00 + $20.00 shipping, is what I consider to be about right for a clean running 4400 with a b&c. Did I pay a premium price? Maybe y'all can tell me.

The good:

1. The saw is pretty clean for it's age.

2. Compression & spark seems to be good.

I opened a Resolution Case with eBay (apparently you can't contact the seller re problems without eBay automatically opening a case with the Resolution Center????). I wrote that a replacement bar, or a mutually acceptable partial refund would be OK. The seller has offered a full refund including all shipping costs, which is fair enough. My dilema is the chances of me finding a 4400 locally is pretty slim, & overall I'm pleased with the saw.

BTW, the seller is an AS member, but he doesn't post very often.

sounds like you are only missing a B/C to make the deal complete. the saw does run? the saw made it to you in one piece? if the seller cannot provide another bar send the saw back if you are not happy. He has already said he would except it.

P.S. i received a 3400 a few weeks back and the bar was sticking out of the box like a dagger. crazy the USPS would not just push it back in. i bought the saw as is but it is a runner after a little cleaning and tuning. $25.00 plus $ 18.00 for shipping.

I just bought the 5200 for $99.00 plus $21.00 shipping (now she is another story) 20" bar plus nice chain. Complete saw though.

Chris,I can't tell you what to do. I think the price was fine but I can't see the piston from here either.

The poor description and lazy packaging along with the missing bar would be enough for me to send it back to them and let them pay for it, but if I had to pay to send it back that might sour me out on that.

Re the eBay 4400..................

Acorn, I haven't tried to run it, I don't want to provide the seller with any ammo should he change his mind re the refund. I'll probably again ask the seller for a bar, or a partial refund, to see if we can work out something.

Mark, the exhaust side of the piston is fine. The scoring on the input side of the jug is light, only one shallow 'streak' that is really noticeable. The seller did say he would refund the winning bid, original shipping, and cover the return shipping. Unfortunately my camera sucks as macro shots, so I didn't bother with photos while I had the muffler pulled.

Obviously the condition of the P&C, esp. with the 'light scoring' on the input side of the jug, is a major factor. The thing is I wouldn't be comfortable taking apart a saw then returning it, the potential for something going wrong when the original sellers receives it is too high for my tastes. I'm sure that most sellers wouldn't be happy to know that a buyer took apart a saw before deciding to return it.

Part of me says it's a clean saw, try for a bar or partial refund, & keep the saw.

Another part of me says return it while I have the chance, the P&C could turn out to be a real problem.

Regarding the missing bar/chain. I had a saw shipped to me packaged almost exactly as you described. Mine had the chain in the box, but the bar was gone and there was a neat little slit in the box just the right size for the bar to slide thru. The shipper swore the bar was in the box. Looking at the box more closely revealed a place on the opposite corner of the box where the other end of the bar had been wedged. I ended up going down to my local post office and they found the bar in the back of the postal truck. Sometimes living in a small town helps out a bit!

Chris do a compression test on it and if it is good, then I would ask him for a partial refund for the amount of what it would cost to ship it back and maybe alittle more. I would also tell him if he does this then you will not leave him a big negative feedback.

I have had to do this before myself on a saw where they did not pack it good and lost the bar.

If you have to apply too much force to pull it loose you run the risk of tearing the chrome from the cylinder or breaking a ring and having a jagged piece of said ring gouge the cylinder on the way out...

One trick I've seen posted but have NOT done myself (no first hand experience with this one) is to remove the insulator from a spark plug and install a grease fitting in it, then pump grease into the cylinder with a grease gun to apply the force needed to get things moving.

well i got it out, cylinder is usable but the piston is toast with the rings frozen in it. this was caused by water damage for sure. i have a new piston and rings so i will take my time cleaning it up and put back together.

i used heat and constant pressure to get it off. i had to block the cylinder up to get it all the way out. pics to come.

Glad ya got her apart! That looks eerily similar to what my 5200 looked like. At least what I can see, your crankcase is in better shape. Mine was full of the "White Death". Will be interesting to see what the reed cage looks like too.

Gregg,

I am jealous of guys and your 5200's. Maybe one day I will find one. I still keep my eyes open.

Largest of those kind I have even seen is my 4000. Any of the rest, just pictures.

the way I look at it...if my 245a, or 3400 or 4000 or husky 365 cant handle the task....wellll..the echo 8000 might could...if that wont, wellll..the husky 394 should...if that still aint enough, welll... I am calling in my stunt double, and he can go find his own saw!
