Thanks for the photos Tim,
I'm working on loosening things up. I had no idea there was an adjuster for the brake.

I also discovered an oil leak. It seems to be coming from a small cotter pin above and forward of the clutch. I'm not sure what is behind the pin, the oil tank I'm guessing.

I'm thankful for the Poulans I do have. But always need (want) more.:D Seeing how I don't have kids or grand kids. I'm thankful for the misfit mob of malcontents, nerds, saw nuts, old geezers, and the darn best group of friends a person could have!!

Gregg,

What a great picture, and an even better group of guys. I need to get me a high res. version of that pic, I think it would be neat to start getting a 8x10 of each gtg.
P.S.- I sent you a pm a month or so ago Gregg, did you ever receive it? Take care, Jeff

The oil tank is behind the hole. The cotter pin should be free to move as it is the vent for the oil tank. If it's leaking it could be the hole has become enlarged over time. I used a larger cotter pin but it was a pain to bend the legs over thru the oil filler opening.

Just checked the PM's Jeff. The last one I got from you was Aug.27 LOL I think that was pre-Linksbucks days, just before things went haywire. :( So no, not in the last month or so.

As Bob said, it's the vent for the oil tank. It does leak oil when you tip the saw on it's clutch cover to add mix or oil. It's made me a quick fluid filler.
Poulan put one on later models on the top of the case under the muffler on the filler hole side which did not leak.

The adjuster changes the pressure level for brake engagement. Don't set it too loose or the brake may engage at full throttle by accident. Not good for the saw.

Get that saw going! I'm sure you'll like it.

3400,3700, 3800, 375, etc. I know we have discussed this multiple times and i know measure cylinder/piston etc for sure but what are the Craftsman saws in that series?
I have Red 3.7's
I have Gray no ID (i think 3400)
if they are thin ringed they are true 3700?
if they are thick ringed they are 3800 or 3400?
the PP 375 is a true 3700?

I have Gray no ID (i think 3400) 3800 I have never seen a grey 3400. Both my 3400's are red but I don't know for sure.

if they are thick ringed they are 3800 or 3400? Either one. 3400 bore 1.81" 3800 bore 1.88"
the PP 375 is a true 3700?

I have seen red 3.7's that were 3800 saws but I think most were 3700's. I have never seen or heard of a gray 3700, they were all 3800's far as I know. You are correct on there being gray 3400's.

I have a PP295 that I have a good used P&C to install. It's a Type 4with the one piece muffler. Any thoughts on my planned muffler mod or alternatives? I plan to block the existing rear outlet with a plate. I then plan on reinstalling the muffler w/o the tubes that extend thru the muffler. This would allow a straight shot out the front two holes in the front of the muffler. If the holes don't provide enough restriction I can drill smaller holes in the front plate that normally hides the tubes. Only question might be; would the lack of the tubes compromise the stability of the muffler? Another option would be to drill large holes around each tube and use them.

What's the difference in a 3700 and a 3800? I don't really see it.
I assume you mean in performance? I'd guess hardly any. I always get this mixed up,but the 3700 has a chrome bore and aluminum piston, thin rings and the 3800 has a chrome piston and aluminum bore with thick rings. Many feel that a chrome cylinder is better.

Here is a 3400 that I acquired from Diggers_Dad while back in the Christmas give away thread. :) I needed another 3400 like a hole in the head. But, just couldn't resist having one that is a little different than what I had. I'm guessing it is a late model 3400, by the black & green color combo & decals.

Went through it, cleaned it up, did all the usual service items. Havn't started it yet, waiting for some new cutting wheels for my Dremel, so can finish the muffler mod. Just put it back on for the picture. The P/C is like new. So I'm guessing its good for another 30 years. :D I had this old banana nose bar hanging around. Thought it was the perfect saw for it!
