What's the difference in a 3700 and a 3800? I don't really see it.

The 3700 with a chrome bore and two thin rings, I believe are stronger runners than the 3800 with chrome piston and two thick rings. What I have found is the 3700, seem to always have better compression than the 3800.

I have a PP295 that I have a good used P&C to install. It's a Type 4with the one piece muffler. Any thoughts on my planned muffler mod or alternatives? I plan to block the existing rear outlet with a plate. I then plan on reinstalling the muffler w/o the tubes that extend thru the muffler. This would allow a straight shot out the front two holes in the front of the muffler. If the holes don't provide enough restriction I can drill smaller holes in the front plate that normally hides the tubes. Only question might be; would the lack of the tubes compromise the stability of the muffler? Another option would be to drill large holes around each tube and use them.

I assumed the sealed muffler was the same or similar design as the 2 piece case. I can't say whether that assumption is good or not.
The 2 piece case pushes the exhaust gas through a rectangular crush spacer and dumps the gas into the front half of the muffler where it has to return through a baffle plate with small holes in it to the outlet in the back half. I just added a port in the front half similar to the one in the back half. It seems run really well for 46cc saw so I was happy with it. I think some guys may have split the case, did a mod and brazed or welded it back up but my search abilities seem to be an issue as the stuff on the old server comes up but is not accessible.
Here's a pic of what I did.

I have done a couple of mufflers on the 295's but they all required welding because I split them open and welded up the back of the muffler and opened up the baffle inside. I then welded them back up.
On this one here I put a slit on both sides of the muffler and open it up.

Nice work. I'm gonna try my idea of having the exhaust come straight out of the tube holes. That way its a straight shot from exhaust port to outlet. Btw, how is your black paint holding up . Looks good as a two tone muffler.

The black paint has held up real well. It is flat black high temp paint. I like that two tone look better also.

So how many variations were there of a Craftsman 3.7? The Roper is the Roper, but what about the Poulan? A 3400 in disguise? I seem to have gone through all this before, but finding that thread ain't even gonna happen. The one in question is a red one, but distinctly of the Poulan flavor.

There were a few different Roper built 3.7's. Some have AV. As far as the Poulans go, there were red/black 3.7 labeled 3700s, red/black 3.7 labeled 3800s, and grey/black 3.7 labeled 3800's. There were also red/black and grey/black 3.4 labeled 3400's.

So I didn't win the 3750. Edged the price up a little for whomever did, though. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with a pair of 3300s, and keep on looking.

This one is advertised as a "Craftsman 3.7 C.I.". Guess I need to get it home and pull the muffler to examine the rings and bore to figure it out, eh?

Crap that thing's NOS. If it's red/black and a 3.7 then it'll either be a 3700 or 3800. A quick peek at the rings will tell the tale. Thick rings on a chromed piston mean 3800. Thin rings on a bare piston mean 3700. Do you have the 358.xxxxx Sears model #? With that, we can tell you which Poulan it is. In any case, that's a sweet score so long as it ain't stupid-expensive.

Not in my possession...yet.
And yeah, I'm holding my breath on this one. And I remember the rings education I received from an earlier post about a gray one I snagged last spring.
Fingers crossed.

I posted up a Poulan 3000 in the classifieds fellas. Would make someone a nice firewood saw, would like to see it go to a good home. Other than selling off a couple, made some headway on the Sears 3.3. Just waiting on some fuel line, I ran myself out of what I need and haven't made a trip to get more. Other than that she is ready to go back together.

Here is what i did on my 2775.I opened the muffler in half, opened the diffuser, then back together and opened 2 outlets on the side.
