It's a duckbill behind a plug according to the IPL. One way valve. If the saw was shaken up I would think you heard pressure in the tank releasing. I think the vent might be on the tank top , left side near the carb. I think I can feel the bottom of the duck bill through the fuel fill hole but can't see in there
Thanks Tim, I'll look. I saw the IPL but couldn't see the valve on the saw.

Last year, there was a guy at a Christmas tree farm near here using a Homelite SXL-AO with a brush bar. Ran real well!

Something like this (but in red)?

Gotta find a different bar for my 245. Chain doesn't track correctly on the sprocket tip. No markings on the tip other than the Oregon brand, but the bar is stamped both 3/8 and 404. I think its a 404 tip possibly. I need to check thr sprocket and see what its stamped, if at all. New pull cord (really needs a new starter pulley, but ok for now) ,fresh mix in the tank, and it came to life. Gonna dig into it more mmaybe this weekend, but it really runs great! Anyone have a proper starter handle laying around for one of these? I had to improvise one, but its not right.

Nice setup Joe!! Your pictures remind me of what I NEED to be doing. But I just can't bring myself to do it. Besides frozen oak, I would have frozen "old geezer" too. Temp this morning is -14 wind chill -35. Hopefully by the time I get desperate for more wood, the temps will at least get above freezing. I can only imagine the old bar oil would pour a little slow today..LOL

At least most of y'all live where you can cut wood without having to drive a long ways to get to it.

I know that some folks here collect Poulans saws rebadged for other companies. Do any of you include Craftsman saws that aren't Poulan? I mostly mean the lesser known Craftsman such as Redmax (which IIRC was assigned an incorrect 358. prefix by Sears) and Solo.

Guys, the bearings of the 4200 are a press fit in the cases?i'm asking because i noticed a movement flywheel to clutch and back on mine.

Pretty sure Craftsman is one of those brands that doesn't MAKE chainsaws - they just rebrand others. Which can be good or bad. I personally don't collect the Craftsman brand, but i would have no problem with some of their older, larger, Poulan-made saws.

Kostas,
My 4200 has crankshaft side to side play as well. I'm not sure how much but I could put a dial indicator on it if you like. I would guess around 0.25 mm
I doubt that is an issue.

Kostas, If I remember right, I think Poulan had some special tools for bearings & seals. But I just did mine the "redneck way" and used a large socket that matched them and drove them out. Installed the new ones the same way. :D Just go slow and watch closely to get them at the right depth. Worked for me.

Gregg,

Joe,

That line of saws should be in the chainsaw hall of fame for sure. I'm getting ready to fit one of mine with a loop of Stihl 63PS and see how it does.

Mike
That's what's on mines. Poulan saw, husky bar and stihl chain!

Wasnt too bad saturday. In the high 20s. I thought about the bar oil too so I mixed it 50/50 with 30 wt.

Here's a bow assembly I was happy to get. Don't seem to often find the cast style for the direct drives. This one does have a few issues, none to kill it in the cradle--a couple cracks in the clutch cover and the bow is twisted to the point it will throw a loose chain. Seems the cast frame is bent at the top and needs to be pulled back. A little heat should take care of that.

The saw the bow came on will probably get rebuilt in the spring. For now, it is on my 53 (the cylinder was already modified to clear the chain.)
