Tim, I never tried or measured, but I'm wondering if the early "flat tab" caps are the same as the ones they used on the 306/245? They sure look a lot alike. Would make sense if they did at first on the 3400/3700. Then later changed to the larger rounded type. Don't know....just babbling..o_O

Gregg,

I did check that PN. The PN for the 306 / 245 is different, maybe. That PN relates only to those two saws in the IPL's I can find. The 3400 IPL's refer only to the Cap kit or to 10221.
Gregg,
Any chance you have a 375, 385 or 395 saw? They supposedly have a 10444 oil cap. That would help.

This makes sense to me. But without both saws to physically try it, I'm just guessing, too.

I don't know the part numbers but my PP395 has the larger rounded cap. So do every 4000 that I ever had as well as a Craftsman 3.4 and 3.7.

Gregg hit on it, the early saws had the smaller flat cap, later ones went to the larger cap.

Thanks guys. 530010444 it is then. Mark, both my early Craftsman 3.4's have the small cap. I think the mold date slugs indicate 1979 - 1980 on both. The later grey 3800 (1987?) has the round one.

Looks like this new guy better hang around here for a bit. I am in the process of rebuilding my dads 3400 he gave me. I also have one more and two 3400 parts saws. Oh and a 3,7 craftsman. But my pride and joy is a mint 4000 that still had the poulan gray bar on it. Not hardly a spot of green missing. This looks like the place to learn everything there is to know about my favorite saws.

Welcome to the Poulan Thread. There is a lot of knowledge here as well as some real nice guys.

Welcome. I'll second the thoughts about the knowledge and atmosphere. If you find those saws don't oil, Fossil (Tim) came up with a source for the material to make new diaphragms for the oilers. You can't buy them any more, so it's good to know. Plenty of other little tricks these guys can tell you about.

Who was looking for, I believe a 3700, recoil pulley with the round metal knobs. I found one in my pile of parts. Believe its for a 3700 but maybe a 4000. Doesn't look as strong though as the normal 4000 pulley.

Welcome to the Poulan area (and forum). You have a great taste in saws (and if you ever want to send that 4000 to me, just let me know). :D You should post some pictures of it (and the others). I love to see chainsaw pictures.

For whatever it's worth, I have a Craftsman 2.3 version of the Poulan that has the round tab and another Craftsman 2.3 that has the square tab, so they did it on those, too.

I have two of those 2.4's as well. One with the old plug (parts saw) and one with the new but they are both 3/4" plugs.
Thanls for checking David.

I ran the saw today and it cuts well. Looks like hell with the red and green parts on it though.
