What does your XL-76 read with that tester?

About 165 for the XL-76

Hmm. Speaking of the XL-76.. The clutch / drum combo seem a match in every respect, except for the ID where the drum fits the crank. I've got a bushing there with an OD of 5/8. The drum w/ bearing I ordered seems to be 9/16. I'll sort out the path of least resistance. (Sorry for Homelite cross contamination !) haha

I think someone said that the 3400's have lower compression readings than other saws but I could be mistaken.

120 ~ 130 is not uncommon for those saws to still be strong runners.

Asked the same question some time ago after acquiring a near mint 3700 that only blew 130, but was still a great runner nonetheless.

And while I'm over here in the AS Poulan thread...

It looks to be on great shape, it is great to have a connection at a saw shop, I get so many saws from them with nothing wrong it is ridiculous, they of course the customer a new saw that most of the time they have no business buying. They may use it one time and on the shelf it goes.

I have 2 3700 bow saws and they just don't have enough guts fir the bows, I am thinking about putting one of the bows on a 4000 I have but wonder if 4 cc 's would even make a difference.

Every 3400 I've had pushed at most 135psi, all my 3700s, 3.7 thin rings and 4000s have had 150-160psi. My 3800s and thick ring 3.7s were about the same as the 3.4/3400s. I'll also add that there is a very noticeable difference in performance between the the 3700/thin ring saws and the 3400s and even the 3800s.

Very interesting. Not sure what to make of the lower compression in what looks like a 3700 in 3400's clothing - craftsman to boot.

After this season, I'll likely tear it down for a full going over. It is my favorite of the bunch right now, even if the Pioneer and Homelite I have might be a little simpler.

Pull the muffler off. Thin rings chrome bore = 3700. thick rings chrome piston= 3800. This would account for slightly lower but good compression.

Looking at a craftsman 3.7 and the guy says it runs good but shut off at high speed sometimes but then will start right back up. Any idea what might cause that and if it would be an easy fix? Saw isn't local so I can't go look at it in person.
