Get the double lip seals from SKF which are SKF 6119. The 6120 (single lip) and the Nationals 253747 (double lip) have the garter spring as well. Often the pics of the seals are a generic pic and not the one you re buying..

The extra lip on most double lip seals are just a dust exclusion lip. The inner lip is the sealing lip. Both work well but you might as well have the extra help to keep sawdust out.

Just looked up the Skf 6119 and it says it has no spring per Skf website.

Bob,

I can't find where you were looking on the SKF site where it indicated no spring but this may help.
Have a look here at this dealer site. You can plug the other seal number in as well.

Here is a pic of the 6119 box with the seal type (HMSA1) R ( nitrile) and a pic of the seal with garter spring.

I hope this helps clear things up.

Thanks Tim. Clears a lot of my questions. Believe we have a Motion Industries here in Dallas.

Need to get some seals for my new to me 3700. Looking at the Skf 6120 and Timken 253747. However my recollection was that they had an inner spring. The ones I'm looking at seem to have no spring. Is the spring necessary and have the seals changed?
Is the original # 19097?

Is your new to you 3700 a Poulan or Craftsman model? I picked up a nice Craftsman 3.7-18 a while ago. The only one of that series I have that was assembled in the US.
Poulan. Picked it up on EBay for $76. Shipping from Canada added up some. Seller said comp was low at 90 so I figured I could use one of my P& C's if needed. Saw arrived and I checked comp. got 150. Piston and cylinder look great. Did a pressure test and it held very well. However the vacuum test didn't do as well. Slowly leaked. Put grease around the seals and it held much better so I assume new seals are in order. Saws was surprisingly clean though the left side throttle handle is cracked. That's the bad news.

I have a 3400 that is cracked as well on the left side. I'm guessing it was dropped on something hard.

No when the get punched in the wood, folks tug on them to hard and they break. Roger has welded several for me.

Just a chanceto post some pics of my latest saw, a Canadian 4000 with chain brake, but no extra side exhaust port in the muffler.

I don't know quite what to think on that saw. Looks like it has been changed a time or two over the years, with all the color combos on the parts. The crankcase looks gray in the first pic. Only gray ones I know of was on Craftsman saws, or replacement parts from Poulan were gray also. I have put a saw or two together that looked somewhat like that. LOL Mish mash of parts. In the end they work just fine though.

Gregg,
