More cutting today!

My buddy had a big red oak taken down and asked if I wanted the wood. Only 1 catch it needed to be cut. No problem. I brought 2 saws. My 4000 with a 20" powermatch and another saw whose name I wont mention. Its a good thing I brought the 4000 cause the "other saw" died and prob needs carb work. That 4000 cut awesome. My only complaint is the saw shop did a lousy job sharpening my chain! Ill be filing my own from now on.
4000 made short work of this

Mike

Lol

yes i ment the paper version thanks! not to bother ya bud but i keep searching in the threads for a tear down... like i said i usually do simple things carbs fuel lines and if to complicated i just got rid of and bought new! as im getting older im wanting to get more into it maybe i should take a class at petech anyways what should i type in on searching this thread to get a break down of one of these saws???? i see the condenser is next to the fly wheel the points on this saw must be under the fly wheel next to the oiler? i saw a few pics of joe 25das teardown of the same saw i have but it did not show any more then him gaping the condenser it looks just like mine i had it half apart its real dirty put it back together as its gettin dark tommorow i will see what i can find thanks again for your help Paul!

Paul,

You are confusing the coil (located beside the flywheel) with the condenser which is located under the flywheel across from the points and mounted to the breaker points mounting plate.
I'm not trying to be bossy, but it would help you immensely to go to poulanpro.com or ordertree.com and studying an IPL (Illustrated Parts List) for your saw.
It will not only give you a familiararity with the part names, it will give you an idea of where they go.

Mike

P.S.

Paul,

Don't worry about enrolling in a class for this stuff, between ModifiedMark, 67 Mustang, Ohio Gregg, joe25DA and redunshee there is nothing you are going to learn in a class that they won't teach you here for free.
There is also a "Poulan Lovers Group" that you can join.

Mike

cool

not bossy bud if thats what it takes to figure out whaT and where the parts go im all for it im just a construction worker that does lawm work on the side and i really dig saws and after reading this thread for a few days i remembered my first saw 25da that i still have in parts just trying to get familer with the saws and how to work on them its gotta feel good to tear one apart and put it back together and have it run!!! i got the taken apart thing down LOL thanks i will go see if i can find what your talking about at poulan pro etc thanks

Serviced a craftsman countervibe for a guy couple days ago. Tried to talk him out of that saw the entire time it took me to clean the carb and install new lines. Even offered to trade a Husky 350 for it. Guy said it was the best saw he ever owned. I will own one someday. Nice saw joe25DA

I've actually bought a saw the other day where the spare was 'professionally' sharpened...had the tag, etc...

JUNK... needs to be resharpened. couldn't cut myself on it (non-running, of course ;) ) if I tried....

sucks when you spend the $$ for it, huh? i'll only have them machine sharpened when they get rocked.

Poulan Super XXV pull cord won't fully retract

albion Is a newbie

Hi, everyone. I've just joined the site and this is my first post. Poulan thread? I'm in! It's the only saw I've ever owned and I know I have much to learn...

I'm not a pro arborist or timber-worker - I have a hungry wood-burner that I rely on for my winter heat! I've owned a Poulan Super XXV for many years, which I just use for firewooding and pruning / pollarding a few managed trees. I didn't realise how well regarded this saw is until I started reading the threads here - I thought it was just a cheap little saw that I was fortunate enough to aquire for pennies as a non-runner. My 2-stroke motorcycle experience soon had it running again, and it's been fine ever sice - fires up even after long lay-offs with no trouble...

Well, until now, that is. The pull cord has decided that it won't retract properly, so after two or three starts I have to pull the side panel off and re-wind it. Then it's okay for 2 or 3 starts and...well, you get the picture!

The spring seems strong enough - I think just some added tension (winding up) is all that's needed, but I've not had the mechanism in bits before, so if anyone can tell me what to expect and, indeed, has a fix for the problem I'd be most grateful!

I would take it into my local hoticultural shop, but to be honest the service has become very unreliable - I might see it back next season...but equally I might not!

Thanks

Come on Joe, What was that other saw? We gotta know! Yea, gotta love those 4000's. Great saws.
Bob

From looking at his "Family Photo" It could have been a Mac, Husky, Homelite, Echo, Stihl, Dolmar or J-red.

I would mark the Macs off because they are too close to the 4000 in size.
The 540 Dolmar will always start and it is also just below the 4000, so mark it off.
Homelites are a fine saw but, except for the sound, who would run one of those when there is a 4000 there? Mark them off.
The 031 is basically a shelf queen so mark it off.
That guys and gals leaves us with the J-red, the Echo and the Huskies.

Now the Echo would probably fit in between the 25 and the 4000, but really anything the Echo can do the S25 can do, so mark the Echo off.

Looking at the tree, if I were going to cut that big rascal, I would want the 25, the 4000 and a BIG saw for bucking it up.

The 61 Husky is smaller than the 4000 so it is out.
That leaves the 2101 and the Jonsered 80.

Back in July Joe was talking about how good the 2101 was running and stated that there is no way he was going to tear into a saw that started and ran that good.....It shouldn't have taken a complete crap in less than 2 months, so my choice for the saw that wouldn't start is the J-red 80.
Not to mention that in Aug. he posted that the J-red gods had cursed that saw and he was having trouble with it.

Ok Poulan Gurus I'm lost here. I have a 71a and a s33 and have gone thru both of them. The problem is the recoils. The dogs seem to be okay. I've changed the covers from one to the other and still no go. So I guess the cups are shot. Is there a source for new cups or do you have to go used either way I think I need two recoil cups. Any help would be great. This is the only thing holding these two from going on the running rack for our GTG.
Thanks in advance,
Joe

That's some hellacious logic you used there to arrive at your final pick, Mike! :jawdrop: I'll have to read it a few more times and try to follow it. :hmm3grin2orange:

I'd say if you have cleaned the fiber washers free of oil and made sure the dogs are turned in the correct direction and everything is installed in the correct order, that's about all you can do. If it still doesn't work then it may be the cups. NOS cups are not real plentiful on Ebay. Might try the "Swap Meet thread" to see if someone has some to share. Wish I could help more but then again you know what I thing of F&M recoils. :censored:
