Threw a maul and saw through some more rounds after work today. Been sitting on these since last summer. Hard start on the 3400 after I fueled it up hot, though. Vapor pushing out through the fuel filter. Lots of bubbles in the tank.

Vapor lock? Tank vent not functioning properly? You can check by emptying tank, pulling fuel line off carb and doing a tank vacuum test. Vacuum should not hold if duckbill valve is functioning.

Drove through a nasty storm , wind and snow and bought a few saws today . Got another 3400 I can use to build one good saw. It's better than the one I got the other day . I also got a nice 3700 and a NOS 20" Poulan Windsor bar. I think I will use it on the 245A I have.

Nice collection of lime green you have there. The 3700 looks awesome and I'd bet it will indeed be a keeper. Good for you on your finds! Max.

Hoggwood, good luck on your diagnosis and repair. I have to say I REALLY like the chain brake on your 3400. I love the ones I've been fortunate enough to find, from looks to function and use.

Looks sweet

Steve,
Have you ever taken a blinded off saw to your workplace & hooked up the automotive evap smoke machine to it?

Can’t regulate the pressure real well, but it sure is obvious when you have a bad crank seal or an intake gasket leaking. I need to make a video...

Never thought about that, would have to make some adapters to fit the machine's adapters.

Just for a point of reference.
I am putting a new OEM piston and rings in a 4400. Ring end gap is .072" - the pin dia at .060" which leaves .012" ring gap. I have now inside mics so I assuming the bore is at 1.845" dia. per their cylinder application chart.

I'll let you know what comp is once I check squish and decide what gasket material to use for the cylinder base gasket.

She is a runner now

$70 ,that was cheap for that saw, good buy.

Steve

Interesting that so few of the big Counter Vibes were sold up here that they go cheap. The guy that sold me the 8500 had it sitting at the end of his drive with a "for sale" sign on it for days and anyone who stopped said it was too heavy. Got it as a runner for $100, 5200 for $75, 4200 for $50.
Kinda of makes you want to puke doesn't it?
I missed a 4900 for $25 (dammit).

Sometimes the blind pig does find an acorn.

Around here the only poulan you find is plastic, only metal ones are the 2000s. Once in awhile a 3.0 or 3.3 will pop up along with a 3400 for stupid money. Those will stay on CL for ever. $75 for a 2000, give me a break. [emoji28]

I hear you Steve. Dumb prices here too. I've learned to bide my time and wait for the deal.
