Interesting that so few of the big Counter Vibes were sold up here that they go cheap. The guy that sold me the 8500 had it sitting at the end of his drive with a "for sale" sign on it for days and anyone who stopped said it was too heavy. Got it as a runner for $100, 5200 for $75, 4200 for $50.
Kinda of makes you want to puke doesn't it?
I missed a 4900 for $25 (dammit).

Sometimes the blind pig does find an acorn.

Funny how saws are regional . Big counter vibs are rare here . Plastic are everywhere. Picked up this Echo 500 evl with echo case and a cs302 . I can see the Echo dealer from my house so lots around. Well made saws but heavyyy The 29 cc 302 weight almost 13 lbs.

I have it but it wasn’t working for me: I guess because I’m not in my home area?

Thank You Tim.

You mean there was a AV model?
Yep, has a rubber av mount for the top handle.

A ton of models. At least two different AV versions. Also a few models with chrome plated cylinders as well.

Like this PP180

Around here the only poulan you find is plastic, only metal ones are the 2000s. Once in awhile a 3.0 or 3.3 will pop up along with a 3400 for stupid money. Those will stay on CL for ever. $75 for a 2000, give me a break. [emoji28]

I have noticed a trend this past year in these parts Steve. Seems more folks are dusting of old, dead saws and asking premium prices. What I would have maybe paid $20-$30 for a season ago are starting at 3-4 times that. Ads always use the catch phrases "vintage", "collector", and "rare". What was a fringe hobby a few years ago, has turned into a market of unmotivated sellers flogging their "gems". I am pretty certain they do their 5 min. of research on eBay and figure their clapped out, 40 year old projects are sought after.

I just paid $40 for the first saw I haven't plucked from a Smithrite or rebuilt from carcasses, in about 6 months. Only clean, low hours machine that I felt worth adding to the mix. One has to be pretty fussy these days.

Those are both very nice machines. That was an era when every one of their saws was overbuilt. Hope you have a source of cheap bar oil. Except for the 601/701, same pump design all the way through the lineup. 302 could oil a 28" like a boss.

So I have a question, maybe and issue, not sure yet. I thought about going to the Pioneer thread but I feel like there are a lot of people in here very familiar with this saw as well.

I have a Poulan Pro 655 Boost Port, I upgraded the carburetor to an SDC80 and put a P-41 muffler cover on it so it would be dual port. It ran very good, So I bought some Boyesen power reeds for it. I installed them yesterday and noticed an issue. Before they were installed the saw ran good around 12,5. When the reeds were installed it sounded a little fat at 12,5 which I expected but when I close the high jet and get up past 13k even though I hear it 4 stroking it speeds up a little coming out of WOT and takes a second to idle back down to 2600. I also noticed it was spitting fuel from the cap as well.

Is it possible the saw is pulling enough fuel at 12,5 but once over 13k its not getting enough? And is the amount of vacuum being put on the fuel tank over powering the fuel cap vent?

There should never be a vacuum in the fuel tank if the valve in the cap is working properly. There should be pressure as the saw heats up.
Does the SDC 80 carb have a governor on it? If it does, the governor will open at a certain engine speed (vibration) and dump fuel into the venturi directly from the metering side of the carb.

I have a snowmobile that I put V Force reeds and an Aaen pipe on . I had to jet down the main jets and jet up the pilot air jets to increase the pull of fuel to idle down. I did not have to change the low needle just the air jet. Have you tried to open the low a little?

I did try, it seemed to help some but not much. Today at lunch I put some large 3/16id tygon fuel line on both sides of the fitting with a large MS660/880 fuel filter, it seemed to help some as well. It's hard for me to tell if it's 4 stroking at higher RPMs, so I backed the saw back down to around 12,500 RPMs which is where the saw was most definitely 4 stroking and it sounded good coming out of WOT.

The SDC 80 has the largest Venturi of all the carbs and has no governor

Actually there's quite a few SDC's with a 19.05 venturi and a few that are 19.48.

If you like fiddling with that stuff, here's a list of most of the SDC carbs with specs and parts.

Good info there! I just thought it had the largest of all the SDC's that came stock on that saw, ive read a lot of people talk about them. Not sure about any of the others, I just knew I needed that one lol.

Just for a point of reference.
I am putting a new OEM piston and rings in a 4400. Ring end gap is .072" - the pin dia at .060" which leaves .012" ring gap. I have now inside mics so I assuming the bore is at 1.845" dia. per their cylinder application chart.

I'll let you know what comp is once I check squish and decide what gasket material to use for the cylinder base gasket.

I fired the 4400 up and let it idle for a bout 5 minutes to clear the oil out of the cylinder. Squish with no base gasket was at .031" so I used a 1/64" thick gasket material.

Comp is at 170 psi with 6 pulls. I'm happy with that.

I need to find out more about the cube carbs. Venturi is listed but are the idle and main nozzle discharge ports all the same size for a given venturi in a carb series? I would like to find out about stuff like that.
