Looking for a quick sanity check on this 3800 of mine.
Trying to get this clutch off so I can replace the crank seal, but the clutch is just being impossible. This one is reverse thread, right?
With the piston stopped via cord in the spark plug hole, I've been putting a socket on it and turning/providing shock force with a brass hammer, but it just isn't happening, not even with penetrating oil.
I could put more force into it, but I've already reached the point where I'm afraid if I go any further it's going to damage or break something.

Any thoughts? Get a brass punch and try that? Use heat? Is it actually normal thread?

Looks like a terrible home respray.

I have no previous knowledge of your saw, but have never seen such ****** workmanship on Craftsman or Poulans.
I do not have much history on it either. It just came in the mail today, Here are a few other pics. It looked nice before I got it but now seems like a respray. A little disappointed. Seems to run well though and nothing broken so I guess I'll live.

Yes those are "Righty Loosey". Get the appropriate socket for the center and use an impact driver. Mine came right of without the who piston stop or rope in cylinder etc.

Impact driver will rattle it off , some can be incredibly stubborn. And yes righty loosey.
If you dont have an impact driver use a clamp to anchor the handle down to your work table so you can slowly control your removal and have 2 hands on the wrench or ratchet.

They can be stubborn for sure. Even an impact driver can have issues at times. Yet, try starting a 3400-3800 with the clutch cover off and see how far the clutch flies. Go figure.
 
To all who have a Craftsman 5.2, do they say 5200 on the tag or 5.2? Just curious as I have never had one before. Mine obviously says 5200.

What about paint quality? Do yours have paint on the cylinder? Fuel line and carb? Air filter? Just seems weird to have so much overspray.

All of the ones I had looked like that. The 245, 306, craftsman and Poulan. I didn’t see it on the newer saws. 84 and up 3.7, 3400, 4000, 3000, maybe qc got tighter. But it never bothered me. What bugged me was the finish on some of the older HOMELITES and Remingtons that will chip off if you look at it wrong.

Thanks Joe. Yea my 4000 is a pretty clean paint so I was surprised to see this.

As for the Homelites its crazy how easy the paint flakes. Gotta be easy with the air compressor. lol

My 4200, 5200 and most of the 3400 - 4000 series saws I have all have overspray. Carbs, AF Cylinder. Plenty of factory repaints. Red over green and the other way, green over yellow etc.

Your 5.2 looks like original paint to me.

They are after all, just a tool.
