Mark, I went out and did a quick inspection of the 203 & 306's I just got.
You were right in your assumptions! Big surprise there! NOT.

The 203 has the small dia. ignition wire & points ign. with a yellow coil.
The older Thirty O Six has the larger ign. wire, also points with black coil.
The newer 306A does have the electronic ign.

As far as the roller nose bar goes. The only thing on it is POULAN and a #02684503. Also, best I can tell, it matches closely to a 16" bar, I suspect it is a 17". The only other markings is on the tip. Torrington Roller Nose, Made in USA.
Gregg,

looks like it!

I'm with you there, man. I've got plenty of hand tools and a torch.

I almost hate to ask but... does the intake and exhust porting result in real engine improvements? Or is it just fun?

well looking at the videos of some of the saws they have done sure looks like it!!!

Some are just so-so, others are UN(frickin')BELIEVEABLE!!! Most are somewhere in between!

Hey guys, made a video of the 245 I was working on and posted pictures of earlier in the week. I have a shortage of wood around here right now, but do have some big stuff coming this week, so there will be more to follow.

Chris

I told ya you'd like that 245! Looks to be running great also.

Man I stay off AS for a day and miss alot on the poulan thread! Alot going on here in the last day. The thread is just like the old poulans, it moves FAST!

We all knew the 8500 was BS did'nt we?

BTW my most liked color on the POULANS is GREEN! When I run a poulan I like for everyone around to know it's a poulan!

The more I deal with folks on here I find that most guys average somewhere around 50 years old. I'm 24. Now, my wife, my neighbor, my mother have been telling me I'm like an "old man" for a long time. "You drive like an old man, blah blah blah."

CT

That's hilarious, my wife always says "I married my dad", I'm 38...

I'm 35 as of 01/28, I love Poulans better then any saw, then again I love classic southern rock, old cars, Harley's, and love Ballentine Ale.

My love affair with Poulan started way back in the late 70s when pop bought a brand new Micro 25, then an updated Poulan 2000. He said he paid $140 for that saw in 1979, he still has that saw, as I have since rebuilt it. He told me the story of wanting to buy the 3400 but my mom would killed him had he spent over $300 on a chainsaw Lol.

Last nite I brought the newly aquired 3400 to his house and he was damn near drooling over it, saying this is the one he wanted, who knows mabe I'll give it him as a surprise.

I agree on all counts John!
I like the good old Poulan bright green as well. There is no confusing it from other brands, thats for sure. And, if you set it down in the woods, there easy to spot too.:)

Went to that fellows place to pick up the 306's & 203 yesterday. Was talking to him for quite some time. He said he had these about 3 years. Just never got around to doing anything with them. Said he had 40-45 saws, wife has been getting him to thin the herd.

In are talk, Craftsman was mentioned. Said he has a real nice condition 3.7.
But, it was blue. I said that it was probably a Roper built saw, and not Poulan. His shed door was froze shut, so didn't see it. Thought for a second there I might be able to snag a nice Craftsman/Poulan 3.7 too. LOL

Dave thats a nice story! My dad was more of a Homelite guy though. Your dad must be confusing his dates though. The 2000 might have been $140 out the door but the 2000 wasnt on the market till 82. Still kind of a jump in price from the $79 the micro cost when introduced in I think it was 1976.

It has been said before that back in the 3400's days, Poulan was not a inexpensive saw to buy. Not as much as the imported saws that were trying to make there mark at that time, but not cheap by any means.

My dad did in fact buy a new 3400 but really he didn't like it too well and didnt keep it that long. I think the main reason he didn't like it was because he was running a 20" bar on it and thought it should have had as much umph as his SXL AO had running a 20".

If he would have bought a 3700 I think he would have had a better outlook on it.

If your dads eyes lit up, I think that would be a great gift for him, especailly if he still cuts some wood.

We will find you another if you do give it up, don't worry about that!

Reading through the Poulan XX service manual that Mark sent me (thanks Mark!), I saw something interesting. The Manual states that this saw series has a fixed H-side Tillotson HU and goes into great detail about how to tune the adjustable L-side.

The auto-only and auto/manual XX IPLs that Mark sent me both only show the fixed H-side carb. The IPL's also don't have a breakdown of the carb........only the complete unit. The interesting thing is.....................my Craftsman red XX has a Tillotson HU with adjustable L and H needles.

Its been so long since I worked on a XX I cannot tell you what they had. I will let you know when I get to the point of working on the ones I have here.

I really do plan on getting them going but I just cannot bring myself to put them ahead of say a 5200 or 306 project! :ices_rofl:

Guess you decided that Lil' John was a bit pricey, huh, Mark? It was such a nice day, up in the mid 60's here, I forgot all about it. Cranked up a few saws.

Yeah it was getting up there and I didn't want to knock you out again.

Actually to tell the truth I was out in the shop finally and forgot about it myself, and I even have a computer and the internet in there!

It's not like I need it or anything just would have been nice to have to remind the Jonsered boys about it.

That was pre Elux to as well.

Dang!!

I go on a three day camp out, get back and see this thread went berserk. I had no idea the Poulan thread was so popular.
