Dave thats a nice story! My dad was more of a Homelite guy though. Your dad must be confusing his dates though. The 2000 might have been $140 out the door but the 2000 wasnt on the market till 82. Still kind of a jump in price from the $79 the micro cost when introduced in I think it was 1976.

It has been said before that back in the 3400's days, Poulan was not a inexpensive saw to buy. Not as much as the imported saws that were trying to make there mark at that time, but not cheap by any means.

My dad did in fact buy a new 3400 but really he didn't like it too well and didnt keep it that long. I think the main reason he didn't like it was because he was running a 20" bar on it and thought it should have had as much umph as his SXL AO had running a 20".

If he would have bought a 3700 I think he would have had a better outlook on it.

If your dads eyes lit up, I think that would be a great gift for him, especailly if he still cuts some wood.

We will find you another if you do give it up, don't worry about that!

I agree. I bought my first 3400 new in, as best I can recall around the late 70's. Came with a 16 in. bar. Still have it. If your dad still cuts give him the saw. I'm sure he'll appreciate it. If you do I'll fix you up, for sure.

Its been so long since I worked on a XX I cannot tell you what they had. I will let you know when I get to the point of working on the ones I have here.

I really do plan on getting them going but I just cannot bring myself to put them ahead of say a 5200 or 306 project! :ices_rofl:

I know the XX isn't the same as the Super XXV but I 'm working on a Super XXV that has a Tillotson HU and has both HI and LO needles.

Thanks guys, yeah my pop at 59 yo is still as active as me at 35, he is a Butcher by trade for the last 40 years, now he has his own buisness making beefjerky. I enjoy cutting wood with my pop, riding our Harley's, and most of all havin a few beers together. Just the thought of him not being around brings tears to my eyes, I don't even want to think of it, looks like the 3400 is his regardless.

I'm sure he will appreciate it, good for you to keep in contact with him.

It means more to him then you can imagine.

I liked the lo pro on mine better, but I think it was because I overported the saw. I'm no saw porter so I don't know but it just seemed mine pulled the LP easier.

Arrowhead who has the fastest Wildthing on earth, runs .325 LPX on his and it works well.

It also may work well for you.

Try it!

Man I stay off AS for a day and miss alot on the poulan thread! Alot going on here in the last day. The thread is just like the old poulans, it moves FAST!

We all knew the 8500 was BS did'nt we?

BTW my most liked color on the POULANS is GREEN! When I run a poulan I like for everyone around to know it's a poulan!

Aint bs, i actually have a lead on another one. This time i will post pictures.

I go on a three day camp out, get back and see this thread went berserk. I had no idea the Poulan thread was so popular.

I was unable to get to a computer for a couple weeks back in September and it tool me until the end of December to get caught up. In my opinion this is the best thread on AS followed closely by the Pioneer thread. I have been cutting wood since 1980 and i never heard anyone say anything good about Poulans until I joined AS. Very few old Poulans in this area so I have not been able to add very many to the stable.

Some are just so-so, others are UN(frickin')BELIEVEABLE!!! Most are somewhere in between!

Mike

has anyone here put together a show-and-tell on porting, or something like an Idiot's Guide to not FUBARing my chainsaw? I've got an underpowered no-name candidate for experimentation.
*edit* I did find Porting 101. Maybe that will discourage me :)

Exactly. From pulpwood haulers to arborists, I've never heard anything good about Poulans either. That's why I was surprised at all the positive response here on AS. Cool by me. Hopefully, I'll get to know it first hand soon enough, then I can make my own call after putting a 306A through the paces.

Just being sentimental but this song is me and my pop, plus an awsome Bob Seger tune, who my pop loves.

Dave, sounds like you really love your dad, man that is too cool. I wish I had that relationship with mine when he was here. Keep him happy with that 3400 as a gift, you'll be glad you did. BTW, Seger is awesome.

I will give him the 3400. Also he's gonna be surprised when I show him the tickets I plan to get for Bob Seger when he tour's New York this summer.....

The 306 and 245 are on my want list. I am very happy with my 3700. I have both a 4900 and 505 project that I am looking for parts for but they will peobably have to wait until summer.

Bob, I'd love to slap a piston/rings in this 306 and get her ripping next week. I need to cut up a few cords for next season and I'm ready to test this 60cc chip slinger.

hey bob, talk about dads and saws, I bought a chainsaw from you back in october or november, took it to the timber to cut some wood with my dad, cut for a while shut it off to move some brush, and I have not got to use it since, My dad really likes that saw so I gave it to him. since then I have started collecting and rebuilding poulan 3400-4000 saws. I fix the mechanicals and my dad paints them, it gives us someting to do together. so thank you bob for getting me and my dad addicted to these dang poulans. p.s. just bought another 4000 off ebay tonight, cant wait to get it here.

I understand how you feel

This is my first post. I have been reading all of the old post. When I read your post it hit close to home. I am working on my dads 5200. I want to re due it and give it back to him. He has forgot more about saws than I will ever know. I know your dad will like it.

This is a awsome site and it is so good to see others that like poulan. All this time when I say poulan people look at me like I am crazy. I have been hooked on them since I was a kid. Hearing a old poulan will do that to you.
