The top end obviously has more rpm's, but I think the sound is very similar. If it ever stops raining I'll try and make a video of my stock 7900 for a comparison.

Not even close the poulan is more saw and more sound. My 82.5cc PP505 that I used to have would out run a 7900 in my opinion and it would not touch the 5400. I'm telling ya man my 5400 would pull a 42'' bar in hard wood with .404. My 660 in stock form I don't think would catch the 5400. Maybe someone ported my 5400 before I got it. All I know is the :censored::censored: would run.
Don't matter cause the idiot I sold it to straight gassed it and now I have to put some time in it to get it going again.

Cool man. Ya someone on here told me that his dad used to run a 5200 falling, and ran a 42" bar on it from time to time.

Nothing motor wise. The 5200 is the 1st version of poulans 85cc saw and the 5400 is the 2nd version with the 8500 being the 3rd and last version.
The 5200 has a nut on top of the air cleaner to hold it tight and alot of them had full wrap handle. The 5400 has 3 screws holding the cover and a regular handle on most. The 8500 has a 2 piece cover 1 for the cylinder and 1 for the carb. All of the parts are interchangeable. Look them up on Mike Acres site. My buddy ran a 44'' bar with .404. on his 8500 and it pulled it well.(Never could get him to sell it to me)

Are you talking about the top cover?? or just the aircleaner?? The top cover on mine has 3 screws.

The saws downfalls from what I can figure from the one's that I owned are the recoil is not what it should be.(had to repair most of them) And the throttle linkage always seemed to have problems. A couple of them had stripped threads where the dog bolted to the front of the case. Each model got better with the way the top cover mounted. The 5200 was the worst awful big cover for 1 screw to hold secure. Your saw definately looks to be in great shape like it did'nt see a whole lotta use. My 5400 is ugly!

Must be one of the last yrs of the 5200. I was not aware that the 5200 had 3 screws. Good 4 you because the 1 screw set up is not a good one.

Not entirely true the early ones that came out did not. My 3700 does not have one, but I am on an epic quest to find one.
The biggest difference I can see, is the ignitons, the 5400 had electronic ign while the 5200 had a point setup.
WOW! Iv'e not been on AS for a few days, get on thismorning and find a Poulan group thread..! Way to go Nik! Im in no way an expert on old Poulan saws, but sure would like a 5400 some day. I read through the many, many threads on Stihl saws and such, which can be good entertainment, but not owning one make ya feel like the odd man out. Its good to be in the company of some folks, that are not in the opinion that all Poulans are POS. lol
Now if you could get Brad to "Snellerize" a Poulan 4000, or other model, that would make for some interesting reading!

Not that it matters but, it makes me wonder which version my Craftsman 5.2 is. It has the 3 screw top and electronic ignition. I can't find any dates on it to try and narrow it down to a time frame corresponding to the Poulan version. I just assumed it was a 5200.
Here's a video of JT's stock 7900 at the GTG in NC a couple of weeks ago.
And if you check out the last page of this thread, you'll see a pic of me running a Poulan 2000 that needed some work. I had just bought it there from someone else and among other things the sprocket was worn out and binding.

Here are a few of my Poulan and stihl saws in Texas. Also have a 3400, 4000 stihl 015, 260 and Echo 351 Vl and 452 vl in Vermont. Also have 6 more Poulan 3400, 3700 part saws, cases and a Stihl 441, I 'm putting back together. Working on a 3400 now that has 100 lb. compression even after new rings. Don't know what problem is as piston and cylinder look real good. Won't start and figure I need to figure out why compression is so low.
