I need some help/advice, I am going to look at a 415 next week. The guy wants 150 for it and it is very used but looks ok in the pics, Claims it runs great. I don't know why he wants to sell it and I am looking at a 3hr drive to look at it.

What I want to know is does the price sound right? And what are my options for mods while keeping it reliable for a work saw? And how heavy is this thing?

Darnell,

Sorry Partner but he has already sold that saw!!!
You don't need to worry about that 3 hour trip anymore.

Mike

Guys,

I've got my nose to the ground and my tail waggin'!!!!!

I MIGHT have a pic or two later tonight!

Mike

What you hiding Mike!

I was perusing Craigslist this a.m. which I normally don't do, but as C.J. McCall said..."This classified advertisement caught my eye"!
Poulan Pro 415 ...$150.00
At the bottom of the ad was a revision that said "Reduced to $100.00".
I looked at the date and it was posted back in January:frown:...Had to be gone, right?
For the hellovit, I called and;

1) Got a real person
2) Yes he still had it
3) He said it was in pretty good shape and ran like new
4) He was going to be home all day
5) He reduced the price to $80.00
6) He said the recoil start thing was broken

So I made the 100 mile trip, knowing that this had to be a beater.
When I got there he reduced the price again to $75.00, but after looking it over, I couldn't steal the mans saw. He also threw in a couple of chains a scrench and a full gallon of bar oil and about half of another.
I wanted to give him his $100.00 but we split the difference of the $100.00 and the $80.00 that he quoted on the phone.
So $90.00 later I come home with this

Thats one hell of a nice saw and well worth the suspense and hundred mile trip. It doesnt surprise me that you offered the man more than he asked either. AWesome score Mike and how you went about it makes it even better

25

Joe,

The 25's don't have ring end pins and the rings pretty much go where they want.
That is why the exhaust port has two bridges in it, so the ring end doesn't have enough room to drop into a port.

Mike

I agree the ones I have done I have staggered them towards the intake side. This has worked for me.

handle insert

Here's a deep, important technical question for you Poulan gurus...:msp_lol:

The red Craftsman 2.1A/Poulan 25DA that Mark sent me is missing the black rubber rear handle insert. The Poulan # I pulled from a 25DA IPL is 23368. The # for the grip insert that I get from the Sears parts website for my saw (358.350940) is 23493 (minus the 5300 Sears prefix). They list it as a manufacturer authorized substitue.............and want too much moolah for it.

Is the part in fact the same for both a 'regular' 25 series saw and the Sears versions? I know there have been a few different versions of the 25 handles, with the Sears units possibly being unique. I've seen 'steeply curved' 25 handles, as well as the straighter CVA handles. The Sears handle seems similar to what I've seen on some late S25DA's and the PP black/yellow versions of these saws. The curve of the handle could affect the profile of the ends of the grip insert, as well as its length and other dimentions. Or...................it could be the same dang part for all of 'em. It's a minor thing really. I can of course run the saw without a grip insert until I get one from a parted saw on feebay or Scott or somewhere...

Aron
I am not a guru by any means, from what I know is there are two different ones. One on the regular 25 and another for the cva saw. I think they are the same for both poulan and craftsman. This is not the same as the micro 25. The also made the craftsman saw that look like a 25 and it could be labeled as 2.1 or 2.3. Same case and handle. If all that makes any sense. If you can not find one I may have one on a parts saw.

You done REAL GOOD Mike!!! Whats the compression like? Must be good, I never seen one with its "Thingy" pulled apart like that! LOL:msp_biggrin:

Good for you offering the guy more than he was asking. Not many folks would have done that! :msp_thumbsup:
Gregg,

i would!

i would pay 239 for a new one since they sell for about 299 here in fla anyways.. you should be able to make a real nice turn around on that 021 it was really clean looking... i was looking at all of them today at one of the dealers in the area like bein in a candy store!:jester:

I dont want to derail for creamsacles, but I would never pay $239 (price today for an ms211) for a 35cc saw. The only reason I got it was cause he threw it in for almost nothing with the Poulans.
Back to the Poulans!
I got one for you. I pulled the jug off my CVA tonight thinking the top ring was broken on the ex. port side. Butttt I found it had spun in the grove and was not broken! Where are the rings supposed to be? my IPL didnt show and I havent cleaned the crown to looks for marks. Good news is the rings are perfect as are the cyl walls and piston. Might clean up the ex port while its off...
Lousy pic but you can see where the top ring was and thats the exhaust side.

Ouch, that hurts. It figures, noone noticed it for a month and once I decide to go get it Mike swoops in and steals it.

Mike,

That is 65cc per acresite and it will be interesting how it compares to the 4000. Great find....

Touchdown!!

Hella score Mike. That is a nice Pro series saw. I don't see those around here much at all.
I did the same thing today looking for a 65-85cc saw on CL, and I don't watch CL for saws much. Never found the work saw I was looking for though.

My score doesn't hold a candle to that 415.
I was thinking on grabbing a Woodshark for clearing a couple acres of saplings and wanting a saw that I didn't care much about. found a mint 2075 for sale 10 miles from the house. I got over there, looked it over and it was prolly on the second or third tank of fuel when they quit using it.
It was her dads, and she was just getting rid of all the stuff they didn't need. I told her I didn't usually give much for those saws. She was asking $15 in the ad, so I gave her what she was asking. Real nice folks.
Then I spotted an ammo box I liked and made a deal with her on that. It was full of shotgun shells, but that didn't go with it :msp_wink:.

So here's my score. Took the saw home drained the tank, sloshed some fresh gas in, pulled the plug and dripped some in the cylinder for lubrication. Spun it over a bit, put the plug back in and it fired on the first pull. Runs perfect. :msp_biggrin:
So I have less than $30 in all this, WildThing included, I have $6 in it so far. That's a 20mm ammo box, inside is clean as a whistle.

My WildThing gimmee saw from last week. Kicking sweetgum arse. :hmm3grin2orange:

I haven't had it in any wood yet, but from the feel and sound of it I'm gonna say it is going to take one heck of a 4000 to run any where close to this thing!!!

If you got a runner for 15 bucks you are doing GOOD!
Use it for your saplings and part it out on eeeeeeeeee-Bay for 10x what you gave for it!!!:D

Mike

Good observation Aaron, and you pretty much nailed it. There are 2 sizes on the rubber inserts. The curved handle early models had the shorter insert and the newer straight handles had the longer insert as did the cvas.
I believe the Craftsmans use the longer version.

Thanks Joe. That's what I figured, based on my 'callibrated eyeball'...:D

I have a Craftsman 358.355061 power head for parts. Take a look at this:

View attachment 175003
View attachment 175004

If it is the rubber insert you are needing, you are welcome to it (the rubber thingy).

You just never know about that Mark character. :ices_rofl:
Carl.

And you never know what that Carl dude is going to come up with. :hmm3grin2orange:

He has a 25 series saw, not a micro based saw like you posted. ;)

I have been really busy around here so my attention to detail probably wasnt what it should have been lately.

I just wanted to get that saw out to Aaron and never noticed the grip insert missing.

I will look to see if I have one when I get the chance to dig out that stuff and look.

Thanks fellows. Very generous of you. I don't have an IPL for the micros, but I'd bet it is a different part. Don't sweat it Mark. It's not like I want my money back for the saw!:msp_flapper:

If you do find one of the inserts that'd work in my 2.1A in the 25 graveyard, I'd be interested in it for sure. I'm possitive I could swing shipping for it at least.

Im not sure if the micro cva insert is the same as the S25 insert. Might be, but I never owned a micro cva. Plus that's a craftsman Micro cva soooo that adds another wrinkle haha. But that's the fun of finding Poulan parts!

Ah the joys of CAD and old saws...:dizzy:

Aron

hunter h

Thank you Hunter. I do indeed have a Craftsman 2.1A labled Poulan 25DA. It has the straighter, less curved handle that's higher in the back than most of the Poulan 25's I've seen. I'll let you know if I can't find one.

If you got a runner for 15 bucks you are doing GOOD!

Runner? Hell it's mint. :msp_biggrin:
I could use the housing on the WhiteTrash saw if I had to. But I think I found a donor in a pile for that.

I agree on the 4000 part of your statement and you got one heck of a deal there Mike!
