Mark,
Did some measuring today on the 505 and 475. I can find no reason the 505 handle would not work on the 475. You must use the 505 filter setup and filter cover but everything else is the same best I can tell......For that matter, I can find next to nothing different between the saws. With a 505 cylinder, piston, and muffler, I believe one could make a 505 out of a 475. Unless of course the cylinder base is different.

I think what we all need to do is to put up ads saying we'll take old, broken or unwanted saws. Make sure you put in there that what they'll be recycled to keep the econazis happy. Craigslist, garden shopper and daype come to mind, I dunno if Ebay's classifieds are free for want ads and I try not to patronize eBay where I can.

I've had ads like that up on CL before. Sometimes they're "allowed" to run...........................but often they quickly get flagged for unknown reasons and removed. The CL "community" is a wierd one. Buncha self-important Adam-Henrys. It doesn't help my situation that I also live amoungst a large population of extreme leftist liberal dumbass types that hate chainsaws, old cars, and anything else that they believe hurts "mother nature". Not talking Republican vs Democrat stuff here..............these folks go FAR beyond that.....:dizzy:

Guys, got a question that may be stupid but gotta ask.

Guy brings me a 2350cva (bad cylinder) and a trashed PP180(good cylinder scored piston) and a plated 2350 piston. Has anyone ever used a plated piston in a plated cylinder with good results?

Thanks.....

Don't do it !!!.................It's a TRICK!!!
One needs to be plated and the other not!

Mike

Thanks for getting my video up! How do I do that? The flooding thing is new started doing it today and only when pulling. Once it kicks over the flooding stops and it seems to run too lean and takes a while to come back to idle.

Mark and I just watched your video and our first thought is that you have an air leak.

Its funny you that you said that I had just ordered new gaskets, reeds, fuel line and fuel filter. I had started thinking the same thing with the air leak.

Nah I wouldn't do that, I'd say and I'm guessing, that the clearences are what make the difference. The chrome probably expands at a lesser rate then aluminum, so in an engine with both items plated, clearence might be too wide.

Hey guys, I took a chance and picked up a 3700 from ebay with only one picture and the only description was that it ran and needed a new clutch. Well no one bid on it and I won it for $75+ $18 shipping so $93. I got the saw and it was nasty, but I've seen worse, so after a full look over, both front and rear isolator castings on the clutch side were broke and missing, also the clutch was totally missing. The cylinder and piston were in good shape so thats a plus, I found the starter pulley broken in two, the chain adjuster is gone. So anyway, I've decided to cut my losses and part the saw out as I'll make most of my money off the crank, piston and cylinder. The top cover is mint and is the louvered type, and the coil is in perfect condition.

CVA complete!

Now lets hope it runs! I just finished a rebuild on my S25CVA. Last time I ran it it was choppy and would not respond to carb adjustments. Then I found the ring ends on the top ring had worked their way into the ex. port. Sooo I tore it down and while I had it apart I did some work to it. First, I opened up the ex. port a bit, then I polished the piston and flipped the rings. The whole top end was in great shape. Then I went without a base Gasket and used a layer of Indian Head compound. See how it works I guess. Then I cleaned up the points and ran a new fuel line since the last batch I used (in a lot of saws:msp_angry:) didnt last. I checked My spark and WOW this one is a flame thrower! Jumped from my tester to the case and nice and blue. Compression went up 30psi from dead on 90 to 123psi. Im happy with that.
Too late to test now Will post results tomm. I use this saw A LOT so Im looking forward to having it back.

Got my next project partially apart on the bench now....No not the 360

24"s on a 245

Who has a modded 245 and what is a good B&C set-up for felling and bucking large oaks? How well does it pull a 24" and what chain do I need? Full, semi? I have a feeling I'll be slinging some chips with one soon. :msp_biggrin:

Plan on running mine with a 28 at the GTG today. Will make note of it.

Looks good Joe. If you lubed the cylinder before replacing it some of that increase in comp will be from the lube.

I agree with the others that you may have an air leak. Started one of my 3300's that ran perfect a month ago. Now can't get idle below 4200rpm. Did a pressure test and found cylinder gasket was leaking. Something else to work on.

I use a 24" bar, full comp, chisel chain, on mine. Now, I havn't done any felling of large oaks with mine. I only have the one 245A, so I havn't been using it as a "work saw". I have several other saws to fill that bill nicely.;) A 385xp & 5200.

I would like to get another 245A sometime, so I can use it to its full potential. They are great running, powerful, light weight, 74cc saws.
P/C are kinda hard to find, so I just use mine for fun..:msp_drool:

Thanks for confirming what I thought would be the situation. So for all practical purposes, the 505 and I suppose 525, 545 handles will not work on the 415 and 475. Not a direct swap anyway.

A 20-28 will be fine. A 24 is kinda the sweet spot for them but they get nose heavy that way.

Randy, I'm not at home and cannot look it up but the P/C acutually are sized a little different between the plated and unplated.

Bad idea trying to mix them.

Joe, using only Indian head shellac for a cyl sealent makes me nervous. That stuff is pretty thin.

Might be OK though, I never used it for that but I would sure keep a eye on it.

My feelings too. Did you lap the cylinder and crancase surfaces? If not, there may be too much surface imperfections to be taken up reliably by the Indian Head. That stuff's not meant to bridge gaps, and may develope cracks (from vibration) and voids if used that way. Air leaks...
