on the 361 - where's a good place to start the l/h adjustments? 1 1/2 out each? It'll run on ether, but either isn't sucking gas (damn that pickup line routing), or way out of wack on the carb.

Well,

First of all throw that can of ether in the tractor toolbox where it belongs! It doesn't have enough lubrication for the top end when the saw fires. Get a dollar squirt bottle from the Dollar Store and put a little mixed fuel in there to prime those saws.

Secondly, one and 1/4 turns out from lightly seated is where I usually start and adjust from there. A turn and a half should work though.
Thirdly, I wouldn't waste a lot of time on the carb until I put on the new fuel lines and filter. It is almost a certainty that it will need them.

So it was you! I was watching it but since buying my PP655, which should arrive next week, I've been on the sidelines. Need to sell some of my saws in the fall as I starting to feel guilty as I'll never use them.

No need to feel guilty, Bob. I look at mine as having been given a nice place of retirement.

Someone here bought a 4400 today. :msp_thumbup:

Got a 4400 here that used to run but has been "in retirement" a bit too long. Probably needs the carb gone through. It's on the radar - If I ever get this damn 361 off the bench. Been cut out for a bow bar. May put one on it. Probably make a good bow saw.

Looks like I'm not the only one then. I really don't like that saw because it's remarkably good at making my inadequacies as a saw mechanic painfully obvious. My brother bought that saw in November '09 and it being a Poulan, I volunteered to go through it. I ended up taking it apart and in true FATGUY style it sat in a box in pieces in the machine shop for over a year "aging". This Christmas I finally got it back together and when it wouldn't run, it was banished to its box once again. Maybe I'll pull the carb off my 361 and throw it on just to see if that $%@#%$# will stay running...

Steve, did you get that fuel fitting out yet? I agree that is a pita on those saws but not really all that big a PITA.

Oh Nik, this is bad, really bad. The 361 is really simple! :msp_scared:

that sounds right on all counts... thx.

I can't even guess where the tank filter is... can't see it at all. another one of those times where trying to get out of work is just going to lead to more...

Does "aging" those saws in your shop allow them time to heal themselves up???LOL

Yeah, Mark, got the fitting out. Thanks for the heads up! :yourock: Used the last 5/16" ignition wrench I had and ground it down. Once you know how it's not too bad. The next challenge is getting the short piece of fuel line on that fitting and the carb fitting at the same time. Used 5/16" OD fuel line. Now it starts and runs but the rpm's oscillate up and down at WOT. Is that normal with the governor on the carb? :msp_confused: It's a Tilly 59A carb and has the governor. Hate to think I gotta take that beach back off to block the governor.

It may be simple, but I'm with Nik on this. I don't like mowsheens that tend to accentuate my ineptness. :help:

Ah you old Weezer it don't rain in you shop does it? I'm stuck down here in the woods.

Well what's your excuse for not being in the shop? :msp_tongue: Ain't even got some heat in my shop. If I had a shop like yours I'd move my bed out there and live. You are kinda in the woods. You're so far in the sticks I forgot how to get to your place. Speaking of which, I need to make a haul over to Cruse's. Might head down there this week.

Well buddy you just come on down. Haven't been able to ride much but i think I can make it that far. Got a saw to go pick up and ain't been to get it yet so you know I ain't been good.

Don't let me forget I did some cleaning and found some more Orline parts for you. Also got your head machined. Been a long time so you come on.

Sounds like it could be the governor or points.

Set the H screw out 1 1/4 turns and see if it pulls clean in the wood. If so your probably OK.

Its just common practice for me anymore to block em off when I have the carb out.

Same for me Mark. I can tune them easier with the governor blocked, especially on a ported saw.

71-A GTG ready

Well almost anyway. Wanting to save the original 30" Poulan bar that was kinda nose heavy anyway, I took a nice roller nosed 21" bar from a Mono saw and did a little adapting to make it fit the Poulan 71-A.

I had to drill two new adjuster holes in it, slot the oil holes just a little and trim the back of the tail some and it now fits well.

It is a .058 gauge bar but I figured that it might be worn enough to fit a .063 chain, but I was wrong. The .063 chain is just a little too snug for my likeing.

So I'm on the search for some .058 .404 chain for it. Looks like it will take about 71-72DL if I use a .404 x8 sprocket and 70DL with a .404 x7.

I also got around to putting the new Oregon rim and drum sprocket on it as well. Makes it a nice setup and gives the option to run 3/8's on it if I want to and I have been thinking of doing just that.

I think it will pull the .404 X 8 though and that would give it some higher chain speed then a 3/8's X 8.

I pinched a worn .058 guage bar down to .050 guage. It works fine if you're willing to run 3/8 chain.
