I pinched a worn .058 guage bar down to .050 guage. It works fine if you're willing to run 3/8 chain.

Yeah you could but .058 3/8's chain is easy to find and it would be a odd drive link (78DL) count anyway so I would just get a new .058 chain if I go 3/8's.

.058 .404 is not that common. Oregon still makes it but I'm not sure on getting it. Like I said, Baileys only list it by the roll.

Mark I'm sure Baileys will make you a loop.

If it comes to that, I'll call them or I'll ask in the Baileys fourm.

Oregon does indeed still make .058g .404 chain. Think it's #58 (convenient). I asked Gregg (Grande Dog) about it in his sub-forum here a while ago. IIRC, he said they only sell 100' rolls (of course) and wouldn't sell loops. Can't argue with his logic, as they'd be stuck with a partial roll for a long time before they'd sell 100' worth of loops. Carlton makes .404/.058 as well. It's sold more in Australia and the UK than here from what I've been told buy an AS member in OZ.

Found some Carlton .404/.058g in a UK ebay listing a while ago. Was a 100' roll though. Not worth it for me, as I'd only use it on a McCulloch or Pioneer (or old Poulan I guess) bar.................if I got that bar CHEAP. I've passed on several .058g McCulloch bars on feebay, just because I want to stay with .063g or .050g for everything. I think one or two of my McCulloch bars are .058g, but good loops came with the saws/bars. Don't know what I'll do come chain replacement time for those bars. Probably will just break down and switch to 3/8" .058g chain, as it's still so common...

Could ya' spread the rails for .063?
I just finished some loops for Wildman I could make a couple more.

Sounds like it could be the governor or points.

Set the H screw out 1 1/4 turns and see if it pulls clean in the wood. If so your probably OK.

Its just common practice for me anymore to block em off when I have the carb out.

Thanks, Mark. I thought about that governor when I had the carb out but generally don't like to fix things that ain't broke. May reevaluate that rule in the future when it comes to carb governors.

Well almost anyway. Wanting to save the original 30" Poulan bar that was kinda nose heavy anyway, I took a nice roller nosed 21" bar from a Mono saw and did a little adapting to make it fit the Poulan 71-A.

I had to drill two new adjuster holes in it, slot the oil holes just a little and trim the back of the tail some and it now fits well.

It is a .058 gauge bar but I figured that it might be worn enough to fit a .063 chain, but I was wrong. The .063 chain is just a little too snug for my likeing.

So I'm on the search for some .058 .404 chain for it. Looks like it will take about 71-72DL if I use a .404 x8 sprocket and 70DL with a .404 x7.

I also got around to putting the new Oregon rim and drum sprocket on it as well. Makes it a nice setup and gives the option to run 3/8's on it if I want to and I have been thinking of doing just that.

I think it will pull the .404 X 8 though and that would give it some higher chain speed then a 3/8's X 8.

Looking good Mark! Making a "limbing saw" out of the old girl I see..:D Funny, I had to do some oddball mixing & matching
on that 203 Poulan recently. It has a roller nose 17" bar on it, the chain was no good. A .50 chain was to sloppy, so I laid a .58 on it, that seemed perfect.

I knew it would be hard to find that in a 61 dr. link loop. But low and behold I found someone selling just that. But had to bid on the whole lot of 5. I ended getting the 5 loops for $5.50 plus shipping. This saw had a severely worn out rim sprocket on it also. Just so happens that I had a spare for my 385xp that fit perfectly on it. LOL So my 203 is now sporting a 17" roller nose, with 61 dr. links of .58 chain and new rim sprocket.

Anyone needing an oddball size chain, I got several. I won't be needing all of these.

Gregg,

Hmm, I could splice a couple of them together to make a longer one....:hmm3grin2orange:

I just dig this ole 71-A. I'm having a hard time not bidding on the one thats on ebay right now as well.

LOL There yours if you want them Mark. I'm gonna keep one as a spare. But the other 3 would give you 93 links to play with. I don't have the tools for that.

Gregg,

I guess too many Poulan guys have to work for a living!!!LOL

I sure wish I could find a way to maintain my extravagant lifestyle and not have to punch that clock every morning!!!:dizzy:

Here are a couple 4000's I got this past fall/winter. This is the first time Iv'e had them in the wood. Both are 20" bars. I think I will use the green/black one as a regular work saw. The other one is near mint condition, at least the best I have come across yet. ;) So it probably won't get used much. Oh, I put my ModifiedMark muffler on the back one also..:D

306

Here is the early light green 306, marked Thirty-O-Six on the side. It runs pretty good, but doesn't seem to oil well at all, if any. So will need to investigate that further.:(

On another sad note. The 203 was getting its first crack at the wood yesterday, and it quit. When I tried to restart it, started making horrible metallic scraping sounds when I pulled the cord.
When I got back up to the shop, I pulled the muffler. Can see some scoring on the lower half of the piston, as viewed through the ex port. Odd thing, the piston looks well coated in oil. Not dry.

I kinda feel like Nik & Steve do with their 361's. I want to just put in a box for a couple months, or year and see if it will FIX itself. These aren't my cup of tea to work on.:(

I have a parts saw or two, so don't know if I can swap anything or not. They wouldn't have the decomp type cyl. on them I'm sure. I may just donate the saw to that Poulan museum out there in Indiana. And see if he can do anything with it, and add it to his collection.:msp_wink:
