Here is the early light green 306, marked Thirty-O-Six on the side. It runs pretty good, but doesn't seem to oil well at all, if any. So will need to investigate that further.:(

On another sad note. The 203 was getting its first crack at the wood yesterday, and it quit. When I tried to restart it, started making horrible metallic scraping sounds when I pulled the cord.
When I got back up to the shop, I pulled the muffler. Can see some scoring on the lower half of the piston, as viewed through the ex port. Odd thing, the piston looks well coated in oil. Not dry.

I kinda feel like Nik & Steve do with their 361's. I want to just put in a box for a couple months, or year and see if it will FIX itself. These aren't my cup of tea to work on.:(

I have a parts saw or two, so don't know if I can swap anything or not. They wouldn't have the decomp type cyl. on them I'm sure. I may just donate the saw to that Poulan museum out there in Indiana. And see if he can do anything with it, and add it to his collection.:msp_wink:

Gregg,

Funny you should mention that. I took the carb, reed block and ignition off my running 361 and put it on the Dayton. Stilll no luck. I did a vac test and the saw holds vacuum no problem. The only thing I haven't done is a comp test but the piston, cylinder and rings look brand new.

Hang in there Nik! I'm not much help on them 361's either. My 361 runs, thank goodness. At least it did last time I had it out..LOL I think I should stick to the 3400/4000 style saws. I seem to have better luck with them.:confused2:

Gregg,

A very different 361 Poulan

I have painted a few old metal housing saws like this. I got this idea from talking to other guys on survival forums. I do some camo painting on guns, bows, boats and even a truck once. I never did a saw until recently. They have turned out pretty good. This 361 was in good mechanical condition except it was missing a lot of paint and what was there was faded real bad. I did have to modify a Homelite XL 12 top handle bar bracket to fit this saw as the one on it was broken. A little cutting and grinding and it mounted up fine. The camo paint I use is epoxy based paint with a little hardener added. I baked it on this saw for a couple hours at 150 degrees. It has held up real well on the other things I have painted with it. This was all done by brush and hand except for the bar. I used a stencil for it and didn't spend much time on it because I know it will wear if the saw ever gets actually used.

Don't set it down in the woods in the Fall or you'll never find it.

Here are a couple 4000's I got this past fall/winter. This is the first time Iv'e had them in the wood. Both are 20" bars. I think I will use the green/black one as a regular work saw. The other one is near mint condition, at least the best I have come across yet. ;) So it probably won't get used much. Oh, I put my ModifiedMark muffler on the back one also..:D

Gregg,

Good looking saws Gregg. In the first two videos it appears the saws are running a little rich, like they are 4 stroking in the cut. Maybe I'm hearing things as I didn't detect it in the 3rd and 4th videos.

Be on the safe side Joe and just replace em. Ebay has a few gasket sets for that series saw, cheap.

Bob

I think your right Bob. I noticed it more, watching the videos than in person. I'm a little gun shy about the rpms on some of them after last spring when Steve was here. He had a tach with him, something I don't own. We put the tach on my blue 4000. Almost scared me!!! I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was WAY up there. :dizzy:
I guess I kinda been leaning toward the rich side, since then.
(no pun intended) lol

Thanks Mark. It was a tough decision of camo painting it. After all the prep work I did and having some Poulan green paint here that would have matched the original color well, but on the bright side, I bet you won't see many like her!!!:)

nice looking saw, is that a 361? I just got a chance to play with mine a couple of days ago. I pulled the muffler and put a little mix in the cylinder and it popped on the first pull and ran for about 5 seconds on the second pull. It did not seem to have a lot of compression when the cylinder was dry as toast but it has enough to run and sound pretty healthy. I have so many projects at the moment I am not sure when I will be able to do any more with it, but I sure like the looks of it and the cast aluminum mufflers are over the top in the style department.:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

Yeah, it's a 361, but this one didn't have the cast aluminum muffler on it. I guess you can call it a half breed with the Homelite handle bar bracket I "rigged" up on it, but it seems to function well. Mine looked far worse than yours.

Either someone changed the muffler or that is not a 361.

The paint was bad but the 361 sticker that was on it was not. Also the metal serial number - model tag on the bottom stating 361 seems legit. It could very well have a different muffler on it. I can't say. I gave 5 bucks for it at a local auction a month ago.

Excited for these!

I am not ready to start rebuilding the 2 335s I got, but I had to know what I was working with. Comp felt good but tthat wasnt enough. So last night I did comp and spark tests. Both had blue spark and both showed 150+psi!! I ordered carb kits and a new filter cover for one. Unfortunately one is missing the airfilter and they are NLA. These will be fun projects. Mught need intake boots but wont know for sure till the teardown. Also those replaceable .325 tip bars are way cool.
TAKE THAT TRACTOR SUPPLY!
