4200

Here is my new to me 4200. This was in pretty nice shape, so I dove into this one , before trying to figure what went amiss with my 5200. I have always been impressed with Mike's 4200's (junks):) So got me one. I just took it apart, cleaned it up, and did the usual carb kit, fuel lines, filter, duckbill. The sprocket was well worn, just so happened to have one in the parts piles.:)
The saw didn't come with a bar. But I had an old 24" Windsor that came on my 245A that I wasn't using, so decided to save a few bucks and use that. I did put a new chain on it though.

I know Mark will probably beat me with a stick for not putting seals in it right away!! LOL

Gregg,

This is the closest I found on eBay, LINK. It's .063 and I'd prefer .050 since that's what all my chain is.

I would tend to agree with Mike, on the bar selection. 30" is ideal, but hard to find NOS Poulan branded bars.
Oregon still makes a 28" in the Poulan mount, .50 ga. Other than that, anything with a large Husky style mount can be made to work.
Gregg,

What bar should I put on my restored 5200? I'm inclined to go with 24", but perhaps that's too short. I'd like a period correct bar for it in LN condition. I'm running 3/8 .050 chain.

IMO a 24" doesn't do a 5200 (85cc) justice. It would be akin to putting a 16" on a 4000. My 4900 (77cc) will easily run a 24" with full comp chisel in hardwood, so yours should pull a longer bar/chain no problem.

28" would be the minimum I'd put on it, but personally...I think a nice 30"-32" is the ticket for the 5200/5400/8500.

Not period correct, but an O.K. substitute (.063):

Great looking saw BTW, it has me drooling.

Gregg,

Yeah..if you burn it up (lean) because you didn't put crank seals in it...that would be a shame. I'd be inclined to send Mark a hickory stick wrapped in barbed wire to beat you with. :msp_wink:

Nice saw!

Brad thats the same bum I bought that bar from before. He said is was a Homelite D196 bar but it turned out to be a D007 bar and mine cam with a non orginal bar tip on it. It was a bad deal and I had to turn to a claim to get the seller to make it right. At least my trouble seems to have made him list it as a D007 mount now.

That D007 mount will need stud spacers just like a Homelite mount will.

If you got to do that anyway, just get a D009 Husqvarna mount.

Nice saw!

Flint.

Yes these saws are over 30 years old, seals deterioate. There cheap and easy to replace and new seals are just good insurance.

this is the piston that I pulled out of the 3.3 craftsman that I got the other day. It had some transfer on it that I cleaned off with some 600 wet or dry. It has some light scratches in the chrome on the exhaust side, the intake side has a couple of scratches way down low on the skirt. These pistons are NLA. A new jug and rings will cost me about $60. Will this thing last long enough to be useful or should I just relagate the 3.3 to being a parts saw. What would you guys do with this one. The body of the saw looks almost new. It has a new carb boot, sprocket/drum, fuel lines and carb kit. The guy mentioned that he loaned it to a friend and thought it was straight gassed. He also mentioned that it did not want to idle down very well....(crank seals/lean siezed). I am leaning towards putting a new jug and rings in it perhaps even a wrist pin and bearing but I have zero experience rebuilding these chrome piston saws.
My gut tells me that the new rings will seal well on the new cylinder and the scratches on the piston won't matter much, the piston skirt is there just for heat transfer and the amount of surface area lost to the scratches is microscopic in the grand scheme of things.

What do you more experience Poulan heads think?:bowdown::bowdown:

p.s. these chrome pistons are hard to take a picture of, much to bright!

That will run just fine IMHO. Did I understand you to say you were using a new jug?

That piston will outlast the saw if it doesn't get overheated.
It should be as good as a new one if it isn't worn down far enough to slap.

From the ebay listing:
THIS IS A D007 BUT WILL FIT ANY OF THE D023, D096 AND D196 MOUNT

Then the D196 is total B.S.?

It's too long and expensive for my Remington anyway.:msp_unsure:

Thanks for the opinions guys:rock:

Yes I think the existing jug is toast. It is unlined aluminum and suffered much more than the chrome plated piston did. The new jugs are still available but the pistons are not. I will have about $95 into the saw if I replace the wrist pin and bearing also.

I will never make any money on it but that isn't what I am about. I just like to hand a good running Poulan to someone who thinks that they are junk and watch the look on their face. I think I could run it for a good many years after the rebuild. I just like to see these old well designed saws in useable condition. I really like that particular model of Poulan. (oh I forgot to mention that they guy I got it from had new AV mounts installed also)

I just don't want to flush $60 or $70 down the drain if it is going to blow up in 5 tanks of mix. I could use those funds to rescue more old Poulans!:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

I have a good jug that you can have. Send me a PM.

Pp455 has a new home!!

Well guys I picked up the PP455... down to only $100. (and $65 for car gas.)(it was a great day here for a drive)(an early b-day present to myself) I'm very happy...

...Even though the Rim sprocket is toasty. Looks like the clutch bearing is dry( maybe toast too) so the oil pump may need some work.

But plus side nice Piston and cylinder from what I can see. Good feeling compression.
Decomp works.
Good spark.
No cracks on lower handle. Carb rubbers all good. Lots of paint and all the bits are attached and intact
Doesn't look like it had the snot kicked out of it...yet,; I hope to do some of that later.

O yeah has an almost new Oregon 200pxdd176 bar on it, with safety chain no less! on this beast?? Is this the correct one? Acres shows a d007?
If not, this a good one for my 3400 or 3800 that I badly needed.
On second look, it looks like someone filed the bar slot bigger to make this fit on the pp455 studs, hopefully it will still function with an "s" clip, drat.

Busy working on a little J-red 535 first then I will be getting this one equipped with lines and filter, but at least one pic in its new home...because those are the rules here, I think

good information, I have been tempted to get a longer bar for my Homelite 923 and Poulan 8500 from that same guy...:msp_scared:

Yep. been watching some of his bars for my XL903 and other XL-Series Homelites. WTH does a D007 mount fit anyway?

The D007 mount is a Pioneer mount. It's mount is basically the same as the D096 mount and has a 3/8's slot.

The main difference is in the drive link count that the bar uses. Notice the guy now list that it takes 110 drive links where the others use 105. My bar also was not the one pictured and arrived with a aftermarket sprocket tip on it.

Thats what got me honked off and the seller didnt want to admit that the bar was listed wrong. After Paypal and ebay making him take the bar back and refund my payment I see he has now deciede to list the bar correctly in the auction.

That bar (D007) is correct for the Pioneer/Poulan pros like the 655 etc.

That's the larger Husky mount, correct? Oil holes line up? What's used for a spacer?

Brad the D009 large Husky mount is virtually the same as the D176 Poulan/Echo mount except the slot is 9mm instead of the 5/16" slot.

You just need a stud spacer of some type and be aware that a 32" 105 DL bar when mounted on the Poulan or Echo may like 104DL of chain.

Paul, nice find. I'm not really up on those much but think that some of the mid sized Pioneers did have some different sized bar studs used on them.

What size are the studs on that one, 5/16 or 3/8's?

If there 3/8's the D007 mount is correct but like I mentioned in a prior post this morning the D007 is basically the same as the D176 except for slot size and drive link counts so if you filed the slot on the D176 it would work fine.

If that slot was filed to 3/8s you could also use it with a "S" clip on the 3400 as that is what the "S" clip is for, to covert 5/16" studs to be used with a 3/8's bar slot.
