NOS bars

Got a couple NOS bars this week.

The Craftsman 4.2 bar is a once in forever chance to find. Probably only came on new saws.

Its not in the greatest shape, got lots of shelf rash and some rust but its all original and never appears to been mounted to a saw.

The other is a NOS Poulan branded 36" .404 Windsor speed tip. The part number appears on the 5400 and 8500 IPLS as orginal to them. I'm not 100% certain that it is correct on a 5200 as I have not found a bar IPL for them yet but I think it would be for them as well.

Thanks to Big Dan for setting me up with this one. I think it will be going on the restored full wrap 5200.

The Electrolux marketing guys must have been sleeping to let this series die off.

There, I fixed that for you.

Your correct though, this was a good series of saws. Really, I like them better then the 3400-4000 series saws. I know that's kinda cold, but there lighter and better built. Just too bad they never made one in 65cc like the 4000!

well Big Dan set you up, I ain't such a bad guy, am not in this for the money, maybe someone would do the same for me if I do enough good stuff....:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange: I am just going to keep working on it...

Dan had listed it in the swap thread. It was open game.

I guess I should tell now that I also have a NOS 30" 3/8s Poulan bar on the way as well.

Sometimes you have a good run going. Got a PP655, and these bars in the last week and have anther surprise coming as well.

Poulan Pro455 update: I like it, alot

Glad to see you posting Paul, where you been?

You get that 4.5 ci holy grail up and going yet to show us all?

I'm getting anxious to see it!

You talking to me? If so here is my new baby. Poulan Pro455
If not, well...time to post something

She cuts real nice, no need for technique, just squeeze the trigger, apply log and bear down, even with rusty saftey chain she is hungry! Just some pine and birch to feed her.

That storm last week brought down some big stuff across the hydro lines. Was without power for 5 days. Going to do some cleanup tomorrow, before the bugs get bad. It will all burn and keep me warm next winter. Very little hardwood on my land but have the green light for the neighbours elms.

I have been in a CAD induced euphoria for the past 2 weeks.
Have gotten a Jonsered 535 (now running, like it alot, fuel lines and impulse were bad) a few weeks past. Then a Homelite xl76, running strong again but needs a good (better) bar to really test it)(only cleaning and fuel lines needed) Great shape.
And have fixed the oiler on the Pro455, 4.4ci 72cc beasty. Man that has some grunt. Not for limbing though!

Looking at its' little brother the Poulan 405plus, 66cc. It is missing the chainbrake, trying to source out a replacement. But will probably grab it up. (what is the difference between the 405 and the 405plus??, anyone?

Looking over Pioneer and Poulan IPL's trying to cross reference parts, tedious, especially when I don't have the years in like some of you guys...This is steep learning curve. This all started in the last year for me. But 50 is a good age to learn something new, ha.

A friend brought me a bucket with a Pioneer P26 and P28 all in pieces. (is that what you guys call a "bucket saw"?, was wondering that, I thought it was one you carried in the bucket of a tractor)...Trying to get at least one runner out of it. Have spark,(faulty kill switch wire to frame) pull start working now and compression. Need the local shop to open tomorrow so I can route out a fuel fitting and bar. Thinking of asking him if I can "hang around" for free for a couple of weekends to learn with some hands on. Done most by reading it on here, then applying it to what I working on. Carb tuning and crank seal replacement are on my list to see and do. Ripping a seal out of a working saw seems intimidating now ...but it may save some from an untimely death. More IPL's. The Craftsman 3.7 is idling funny.

Here are my bigger runners for a photo shoot, sorry Guys, not all are Poulans.

Mark. how do you like the Pro 655? Should I be looking to get the complete set...? Do I need even more power....no but what the heck.

Now back to my IPLs and that bucket
Paul
ps my snowbird neighbour was supposed to bring back me a 4200 piston and rings, he forgot. Now I wait or buy at a much higher price to get the same thing up here, north of 49; drat

There's your problem, Stephen. You're too ethical and have integrity about the way you collect saws. On the other hand, Mark... :hmm3grin2orange: :poke:

Well parts saw came and I pulled crank to use on my other saw. What's the consensus on buying new bearing/ seals for the crank? Hard to tell if the old ones are ok. Guess I could install P&C and do a pressure test first. Also in removing chainbrake to install on the good tank the spring popped out. I haven't been able to reconnect the assembly as the spring is way to stiff. If I can't figure it out I'll buy a new assembly for about $15.00. My patience is worth the price. It'll be interesting to see how hard it is to install the piston into the cylinder as there is no way a ring compressor will work.

Maybe the bottom of cylinder is tapered so you won't need a compressor. Some saws are, don't know if this is one of them or not.

This bar is correct for 5200 also - I double checked my brochures for 5200 and it shows this bar.
There is a very good looking 252 on ebay. It has a different muffler than mine - mine has a stack with a downwards hook to direct exhaust towards ground.
The 4200-8500 series is much better that the 3400-4000 series (I never liked this series but 4000 was best - auto oiler design very dirt sensitive, weak isolator system & too heavy . The 4200-8500 were good saws (when built right) but manufacturing high cost & quality problems killed them - handlebars that lossened and broke, leaking fuel tanks and scuffed engines.

They aren't bad at all!!!
A carburetor screwdriver is the only help I've ever needed..............yet!

Paul, I was speaking of the other Paul, (moparman) but any time you post is great as well.

As to the 655, I really have not done anything to it yet. I wanted to get this 4000 done since it was all in pieces. The 655 is next. Probably get to look at it Sunday as I have been working to death.

I have ran them before though and there tuff! I belive you would love one since you enjoy the 455 so well. I dont know about the 405. Thats a big saw for 65cc. The Poulan 4000 kinda has me spoiled for a 65cc saw. I have 2 P-41s here and I just have not had enough interest in them to look at them much being only 65cc and that large and heavy of a frame.

If your asking me if you need to complete the series your asking the wrong guy.

Thanks Paul, I thought for sure that it would be a correct bar for the 5200.

There is a real nice big Poulan 8500 on E-bay right now. I have never given much thought to E-bay, it has been several years since I have sold anything there.

I have been watching this saw with some interest. I have one but mine is not as nice. The reserve price has been lowered, but I thought that it had already been met? Am I mistaken? I am a little confused. Have any of you guys been watching this as well? Perhaps I am mistaken. I am old and sometimes I don't know what I am looking at.:msp_unsure::msp_unsure: The way I read it, it allows the highest bidder to back out if he wants to after he gets an e-mail. To me that smells of fish. It is a great saw and probably well worth the price to the right person.....that person not being me. What do you more experienced think?

The reserve means that the seller has an option to not sell the saw to the highest bidder if the reserve doesn't get met. If the seller chooses to, they can offer it to the highest bidder if that happens. It is kind of a good thing for the seller. Say you wanted to sell a saw and wanted to make at least $150.00 on it, you could set that as your reserve and have the option to not sell it if that price didn't get met.

But why would you lower it after it had been met? If not to offer your buddy the chance to bow out and sell it to the next lower bidder? Not saying that this is what went on but like I said I am sometimes not sure of what I have been looking at. I thought the reserve had been met at $600

The reserve was lowered a couple of days ago.
I'm not sure what the bid was when it was lowered but I'm pretty sure the "reduce reserve price" option goes away when the reserve is met.
I believe you may be confused about the sequence of events.
