I came across a Craftsman 3.7 at the scrap yard last weekend and was wondering what years they had the built in sharpener in the clutch cover. I see where this one had it but it is no longer there.

Most Poulans and their clones with Power Sharp will be the 306 & 245 type saws. But, I seem to recall seeing one on a 3700 type Craftsman. I keep thinking joes25da has one. I can't find diddly using the search function on here.:dizzy:

I think it would be a rare find indeed, to find one with its parts still intact. Mark restored one using new hard to find parts. Showed what it was suppose to look like and how it functioned. But, I can't find that either...

I think the stone was hard and cracked easily. Once that happened, it was pretty much useless. It required a special chain also. When they broke, I guess folks just neutered them and run regular setup on them. A good idea in theory I guess, but in the real world, not so much.

Gregg,

LOL, I new someone was gonna say that! Mike is absolutely right! (big surprise there) Most Poulans I have tried, don't noodle well. Just won't clear the tight confines of the clutch covers. I thought about using the 385, it noodles very well. I do just that at times on the very big stubborn gnarly pieces.

I guess I'm old fashion, set in my ways too. Thats the way I learned to quarter stuff, so thats the way I do it. :msp_ohmy: Seems like a lot of waste too, when making all them noodling cuts. Kinda like using a chainsaw for milling. I milled a bunch of oak & cherry logs several years ago. I filled that trailer twice with saw dust. LOL

Gregg,
My 245 seemed to be noodling well until the fire started...seems I had a loose muffler and caught the shavings on fire. I didn't think green wood would burn that well. Anyway I don't use that saw for noodling any more.

LOL, Can't say I ever started a fire with a chainsaw. When ya want one, I sometimes have trouble with a butane lighter.:D
As far as "noodling" goes. I never even heard that term, till joining AS. Only noodles I knew of was what my grandmas made from scratch. Another was when we got a pool. My sister back east said ya got to get some noodles for the pool. My first reaction was, what the hell is that? and what do you do with them? Well, I can say now, without noodles in the pool, I'd be lost.

Gregg,

Yeah, I guess them little wood slivers kinda resemble noodles. I'm still in the dark about the noodles for the pool..we don't have a pool here.

My first logging saw was a "freebie" Poulan Pro 455 with a 24" bar.

Try limbing a truck load of hemlock with that thing. We called it "The sawmill". I was the only one of us (3 guys) who could run it all day in the woods. The other guys could barely start it..lmao..

Gregg,

There was a Craftsman 3.7PS on ebay about six months ago (Poulan 3700 type, not a Roper). The PS stuff looked to all be there. Couldn't see the condition of the stone, but didn't care...........because I'd have just ran a regular chain on it anyways. Got outbid on it.....

thanks mark! when i did the muffler i shoulda took pics i know what you mean when i start on somthing i dont stop to take pics either ! anyways it has the one hole in the middle, 2 itty bity holes on each side i drilled those out the same as the middle. then I opened up the slots a lil .. i even put the screen back in( i normally dont) it was so clean it looked new ... then i readjusted the high a lil so it sounded like it did stock rpm wise dont have any logs that are not hacked up to bury it in... will that work to give it a lil more grunt or can i do more with out a welding unit and such?thats about all you can do if ya dont weld correct? thanks! If any one knows if there is a thread on these saws i was trying to find more on basic mods will keep searching thanks!

im not sure i dont think the smaller ones would im thinking 2900 2775 2750 older 295's im not sur the bolt pattern lines up i was looking on ebay and what not it may not make much difference from the one i just drilled out....i did it on an older craftsman 46 cc model im betting those would bolt on also it seemed to breath real well ....i have a 2 wild things i will look and see if the bolt up the same im thinking they dont... but im not sure these dudes will all know one of them will chime in eventually! if it will work maybe i could buy one from ya or trade? shoot i may even have one or 2 in my parts bin but they would be in really bad shape im gonna try and find a clean one or one i can get looking good and repaint.

Adding to collection

Looking for a PP525 to arrive any day now. This will add another Pioneer clone to my PP405 and 655 collection. These are big heavy and powerful saws. Would hate to handle one all day and thankful I don't have to.

Just wanted to update the problem I had with my 4200, not oiling the other morning. Took it apart this morning and found the weighted pickup on the line disconnected. :dizzy: Thank goodness for little easy repairs I guess. So will not be needing a new oiler, at least not yet. LOL

I had some thin wall Tygon, very flexible tubing, the correct size to replace the line with. The spring even fit it perfectly.
Most Tygon line seems kinda rigid for this application. But I think this will work great! Anyway, the saw puts out more oil than a Texas oil field now.:)
