I cleaned the carb, put new fuel lines and carb kit in it but I must have done something wrong...The saw will start now and run but it runs super rich and spews fuel out the carburetor while running. I turned the H and L screws almost all the way in and it's still getting too much gas. I was careful to check the height of the inlet lever with the "W" gauge so that part is ok. I guess it's possible the spring might have slipped out of it's hole, don't know for sure. I'll have to tear it back down and see what I did wrong.

Well, the panic is over and the saw is running! I took the carburetor off again and took the inlet needle diaphragm side off the carb and put the other gasket under the round plate. I don't know why they gave me a choice of two gaskets, they looked similar but I guess I chose the wrong one. I re-positioned the lever just a tad lower and re-checked with the W gauge. I don't think the lever was wrong the way it was but I put it a little lower anyway. I also readjusted the H and L to about one turn to start with and worked from there, I never had to turn them much. Whatever it was, it worked because it really runs good now!

how does this look?

ok so i took the dayton 25sda clone apart... all the way to the piston tonite acid washed a cylinder first time .... now i tried to get some clear pics the wifes phone takes better then my camera... its not scored but its well worn i took pics in three sections ya all think i can just flip my rings pop on the new cylinder or should i just part it out?i have to order some gaskets anyways so it will be in a box for a week or 2.... i managed to tear every one i touched tonite no broken screws or bolts so thats all good if ya all think the piston aint to bad i will be slaping it back together with moto seal as my gasket...it seemd to have great compression before it blew the plug right out after i used that permatex thread maker LOL... let me know what ya alls thought are if the pics are good enuff...View attachment 193937View attachment 193938View attachment 193939

What can anybody tell me about a poulan 8500. I found one for sale and would love to have a larger saw. Assuming the saw is in good running shape and clean, what do you think a good price would be for an 8500(it has a 36" and a 28" bar included). TIA

couldnt wait!

i could not wait i went got the stuff cleaned it flipped the rings and its together used 2cycle to lube it the process was pretty easy to bad they dont make the new parts any more .... uggg was looking in the ehaust port and turning the cylinder fast by hand the oil flugged out the plug hole right in the dang eye!dam man chicks are tuff to get stuff in the eye all the time and not carry on LOL! nothin i can do now till i order gaskets less i make some i might.. not tonite time for beer!

Asking that question in this thread is not going to get you a balanced response. For example I sold my wife into slavery to get my 8500 and there are a few here who would probably, and quite happily trade their first born for a good example. And saying that it has a 28" and 36" bar included is like saying "do you want salted peanuts with your beer?" Of course you want it!

Now go buy it, take some pictures of it and put them here.

So I assume you think it's a good saw? What do you think a fair price would be for a good running saw? Still kicking myself for not buying a NOS in the box poulan 505 last year for $585.

An 8500 just sold 3 days ago on eBay for $415 + shipping. It was sold by an AS member. It was in good running condition and looked very good cosmetically. Decals are terrible on these saws especially on the clutch side, so that's not a real good indication of what the saw is like or how it's been treated.

I am sorry I cannot give a dollar value for the 8500 as I live on the other side of the world where saw pricing is completely different. Poulans here are cheap because people don't know what they are or equate them with the stuff currently sold in chain stores. I gave $200.00 for my 8500 in fairly rough (but orignal) condition, but have never paid more than $100.00 for any of my others.

Realistically, the saws worth is in its desirablity. For things we really want (like an 8500!) money is the stuff you use to get it. When we buy other saws we do so mainly as they are a bargain.

Got the new piston and ring and I installed it. Seemed to slip in too easy as I didn't have to compress the ring, slipped right in. Put saw back together w/o carb and comp is 90psi. I cleaned up cylinder and wonder if I enlarged it too much. Seems hard to believe but I have no other clue as to why comp is so low. I compared comp to the 4018 I picked up from Brad Snelling and that saw hit 150. Now it was ported but I don't think that would affect comp, would it? I hate to buy a new cylinder as the saw isn't worth that much. Any thoughts?

I was wondering what you 'cleaned up the cylinder' with. I guess that between general wear and the cleaning up process you might end up with it oversized. It's possible someone has a used cylinder you could purchase. I doubt if porting would raise the compression much.

right rings?

I know how you feel about chasing your tail on a project... I'm going through that with one of my cars. :bang: Quite frustrating at times.
