After doing the Husky 142 and the 2775, I couldn't very well leave the old Craftsman alone. I had opened up the outlets behind the muffler a bit, but there is not much room for the gases to exit around the side. I peened the edge of the muffler back a bit to allow more clearance there and bent the aluminum shield out a little bit, but it's still pretty restrictive. So I added a small additional outlet on the side. The effect was not as dramatic as with the 2775 but it definitely helped.

Did you enlarge the holes in the diffuser on this one?

Shipping is both fast and free. Scroll down and the same saw is selling for $109 and change. Bet you pay the freight though.

Postage isn't that bad on a chainsaw unless you live on the opposite side of the US.

Sometimes my sarcastic wit is lost in print. I have a couple saws enroute from Kalifornia.

No - I looked at the combined areas of the holes and the slots at the end and judged that they were larger than he outlet area, so I left them alone for now. I may go back and do that though. I'm not sure the second of the original back slots is very effective as it's mostly blocked by the first one. So the outlet area is not as large as it appeared when I was working on it. The saw is running very well though so there's not a lot of reason to mess with it more.

I will disagree politely. Open the diffuser and the new slot some more. Be prepared to retune, and to recant your reasons for leaving it alone.

I weld the back ones shut after stamping them flat. I use a piece of one inch metal conduit for my deflector, and have over a square inch under the diagonal cut open. They seem to like that, as do I.

Hey - if you've already posted a pic, I slept since the last time I saw it. Would you mind linking/posting/reposting?

Thanks,
Vic

Oh, twist my arm why doncha! I'll try the same mod I did on the 2775's diffuser, as that certainly worked well. I have the back outlets opened up about as well as I can, and I used a piece of round stock to dent that back corner where they exit. They are certainly flowing more than when they started.

I was a little concerned with the side outlet I added because I don't want to melt the housing, and I added an aluminum duct tape strip after cleaning the plastic with brake clean. It seems to be holding. Anyway, I could extend it upwards some.

I ran that 2775 again yesterday through some oak, and the thing runs so well it's almost startling. I haven't got anything left that's large enough for the 20" bar right right now, but I'm looking forward to finding some.

What is the outlet area of the metal conduit and is it screened ?

I have a question. Where the hell were y'all 10 years ago when I coulda used this 2900 all souped up like it is now? I never would have thought that opening up the exhaust would have done so much to the power in this saw. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Hey Chris, If you want to get the heat out of the muffler thats on your craftsman saw and retain your hearing then tweak the two rear louvers and add a 1/4" by 1/2" hole next to each louver outlet. The heat shield has plenty of room to flow the exhaust. The hammer and cold chisel method takes less time but looks bad .

I don't cut on FS land, so it doesn't bother me to leave the screen out.
That said, every saw I mod for someone else, this one included as its now sitting in a garage at an aged friends house, has a screen. This one is easy, just put the screen back on the diffuser as it came from the factory.

Mufflers are there to limit noise and direct exhaust. The saw doesn't care if you take the muffler off. Now keeping crap out of the cylinder and your hearing just got immensely harder, but it can be done that way also.

Hey, ya gotta post some pictures!

I was just about giggling when I ran the 2775 yesterday, it's only 46cc! After all the years of it plodding slowly along, it's just amazing how much different it is now. Change the chain, drill some holes and tune it. And it's one of the cheapest, most maligned saws out there.

Hey Scott, I actually enlarged the back outlets pretty far and there is probably enough clearance back there for them to be effective. Combined with the side vent the output area is fairly large - before I increase it more I'm going to do the baffle and see how that is. I'll try to estimate the total output area.

When I did the baffle on the 2775 I enlarged two of the holes on the top and added three in row to the clutch side on the bottom. My intent was to give better access to the screen on the bottom, and to try to make the gases swirl counterclockwise (viewed from the front) so that they would be directed towards the outlets. I have no idea if this works or even makes sense, it was just a whim.

Oh, and I didn't use a cold chisel, I used a rotary saw blade on my drill press, although the results are a little ragged.

eh, i gotta spread it around... ou1

I can see the conduit.

what are you stamping and welding?

With my Droid X it was actually easier to get to this thread because now if it's not on the front page and I have to use the combined thread sticky it now goes to the first page instead of last page and it takes longer to get to the last post, sorta shot his self in the foot is you ask me......
